They're expecting the death toll to rise a lot, over 100 people still trapped in one collapsed building alone.

Yep, things are pretty god damned messed up here right now. I used to live in Christchurch, it pains me to see my old home destroyed.

Though to be honest it's the not hearing from friends that's worst. I'm sure they're okay, but not knowing is just plain hell.

There's been two buses that were completely crushed by falling buildings, that alone would cover the 65 currently confirmed. We're going to go into the hundreds easily.

The sad thing is our telecommunications are jammed, so mobile calling is a no go, services are totally overloaded. Landlines are cut to most parts, yet the great thing is people who do have access, are able to post onto Facebook and Twitter and let us know they're okay, it's how i've managed to find out from a few people that they're safe. It's the ones that haven't had a chance to say anything yet that makes me worry.

Christchurch suffered a 7.4 Earthquake in September last year. They've had constant aftershocks ever since. This one was weaker on the richter scale, but far more shallow which caused the catastrophic damage we're experiencing.

Yes I was wondering why this one is so much more devastating considering it is weaker on the richter scale.

My parents are occasionally updating me with bits of news, as they're watching in Australia. Our prayers are with you.

They've now had to ground ALL flights in NZ because the National Air traffic control centre is in Christchurch and all the air traffic control for the country is run from there.

My aunt and relatives live in Christchurch - luckily she was Ill at home when it happened and they are all ok (though probably very stressed out). My thoughts go out to everyone over there - I hope the aftershocks don't keep rumbling like they did before.

My heart and prayers go to you New Zealanders.

From what I'm watching on the news now, Australia is sending a rescue team to assist and do what they can. It's just sad... really sad.

My thoughts and condolances to our brothers across the pond from Aus. ANZAC Pride chaps; show 'em what you're made of.

Any word on response from NZ Armed Forces for the disaster? Usually they're scrambled when disasters of this magnitude occurs :(
