    Garage Kit Style!

This is the format I'm passionate about. The era of Generations and the Third Party boom is giving us a lot of great stuff that's perfect right out of the box. But there's a lot of joy to be had in making your own custom figure, and a complete garage kit lowers the skill and time barrier to completing a really nice piece that you've customized just to your liking.

It's not for everyone, but it's very satisfying if you roll your sleeves up and dig in.

A Note on Material and Texture

My kits are fabricated on a desktop 3D additive printer. I print in both ABS and PLA plastics (mostly PLA going forward). The materials are very similar to what Hasbro uses to produce "real" toys, the fabrication process is different, so the materials aren't as child-safe and indestructible as injected-molded parts, but they share most of the same properties and are very durable.

The process also leaves the parts with a "texture" that is not mirror-smooth as you may be accustomed to. The most common feature is a "stepped" appearance between layers of material. At a glance it's not noticeable, but up close you can certainly see it.

If you want to put in the effort, there are a number of techniques you can use to smooth the material (PM me and I'll give you some pointers!). Alternately, if you decide to look at your figures a little differently, the texture can actually add to the realism of the models, giving them visually interesting surface detailing, and opening up great opportunities to accomplish a great gritty dry-brushed look.

$$:scalper :gen069:  Also, I can sell these kits very inexpensively!! $$

Enough of that, onto the available kits!

    Shapeways Shop

By now most everyone knows about Shapeways. They can print very beautiful high resolution parts in a variety of different materials. You get very beautiful results, but they tend to be rather expensive to work with.

DestrongerLupus's Robot Shop by writerwolf on Shapeways

Discount on Garage Kits when you purchase a Shapeways item

I have all my parts up on Shapeways, including ones that haven't hit my Etsy shop yet. The idea here is that you can cherry-pick key parts from Shapeways in high res (for instance the robot's heads), and use them in conjunction with the cheaper parts in the Garage Kits.

As an incentive to mix-and-match, I'm offering a $2.00 credit off any Garage kit for each component purchased on Shapeways (just share your invoices with me, and I'll issue you a refund)

For instance, if you bought the Icepick Garage Kit ($20) and Purchased 2 components from Shapeways, for instance the robot and monster heads, I'd offer you a $4 refund on the Garage Kit (2 x $2). It's not a huge discount, but given the huge discrepancy in pricing scales between my garage and Shapeways' industrial complex, it's the best I can do.

Available on Shapeways (Prices vary based on material choice):

These both look incredible. I'll be ordering one of these for sure! Great work!

Also, it looks like a really good fit there beside Titanium Hot Zone and Universe Blades.

What would be cool would be a Streetwise head for Universe red alert or prowl to help fill out the protectobot team!

    Thanks!

My next trick is to give Blades a little more G1 love. (new head, maybe chest, leg guns)

Not sure who I want to be Streetwise, Red Alert isn't a bad choice, but I'm not quire in love with him either. I might just go with that though.

Groove keeps me up nights. Too few good non-femme bike molds around :/

Thinking about WreckGar, but it'd require a heap of new parts to get him right....

Oooh, yes blades could definitely use some g1 love. Never thought about leg guns, but with those pegs right there, it would be easy enough to plug something on! Can't wait for that.

Groove is a conundrum. Something along the lines of Animated prowl might be handy.

    Good luck!

I will get some nicely finished pieces up asap. I'm purposefully photographing them as "ugly" as possible so no one gets any unexpected results, in person if they're not 2 inches from your face it's really not much of an issue.

For a guy with "wolf" in his name, I'll be sure to do an extra good job ;)

Seriously though, this will be a great opportunity to show these parts in the best possible light. Thanks for taking the leap of faith, I hope you won't be disappointed :thumb

I'm assuming you hit up Shapeways? What material did you choose, can't wait to hear how it turns out from them.

OK all current pending orders have been shipped.

I think I'm going to pull the full-finished option as a standard choice, if anyone wants me to do the finish work I'll take that as a PM-conversation and we'll handle it as a commission style job (I'm cheap, don't worry)

Don't think I can keep up the pace with finished ones and justify the price I was initially asking.

I received my finished G1-style First Aid chest and head in less than a week's time. Wow! I posted a couple of pics below. Overall, the set looks great and was easy to apply to the PRID Ratchet figure. Paint and plastic are good. Unfortunately, though, my First Aid head popped off the neck / ball joint. Therefore, some glue may be visible in the below pics -- It was an easy fix. I'm very pleased with this set. It's recommended.

I'm super glad you like how he turned out! Apologies on the neck, I went a little conservative on the glue out of fear the joint might fuse while in transit inside that hot little envelope :)

I noticed in the pics that the core-neck-block part is popping up over his chest, it'll actually sit entirely inside the chest and catch without popping out if you position it slightly differently.

But you might be doing it on purpose to evoke some extra Scramble Power :)

Any thoughts to a Fixit variant for the RID Ratchet mold? I love what you've done with First-Aid, but I personally don't like having combiner team members that can't combine :-( I have been thinking though that RID Ratchet would be the perfect mold to homage the G1 Micromaster Fixit, he just needs a good head, lol

    FixIt eh? Oh...you mean Pipo!

Hehe, no matter what you call him, I think this is a GREAT idea. I'll see if I can whip up a new head and chest to give us a new classics Micromaster to hang out with Erector and Countdown and BigDaddy.

    Great suggestion!

Though, my long term goal is to get a Defensor cobbled together from the official and my semi-official bots, so I might win you over yet ;)

I feel like the Combaticons are pretty well covered by other products out there (not to mention the upcoming FOC toys all of which have decent head sculpts, albeit not voyager sized), so this isn't really a priority for me, but I might be willing to work on them on a commission basis, drop me a PM if you want to discuss.
