Plot: The plot revolves around a supervillain named Gru (Steve Carell) plotting to steal the moon while he hides underground in a suburban neighborhood. In the teaser trailer, the Great Pyramid of Giza is shown to have been stolen and may contribute to part of Gru's plan. His plot is jeopardized by three orphaned girls (Miranda Cosgrove, Dana Gaier, and Elsie Fisher) who see him as a prospective father.

    Aha, there it is!

So, there was an advance screening of this last night. Basically...

The instant this movie comes to theaters, go see it. The last time I was this surprised at a movie was Kung Fu Panda, and that was because the story went in a different direction that I thought. The thing that was different here was I thought the Minions (the little yellow guys) would steal the movie, and they did--except they were only half the scene-stealers. The three little girls he adopts--Margo, Agnes and Edith--are the other half, and I'd argue that they stole as much of the spotlight from the main cast as the Minions did, particularly Edith, the smallest of the three. There's some great bits between her and Gru (the main character/bad guy).

The story is pretty simplistic--mad scientist isn't as great as he thought he was, devises plan to get back on top--but the execution was what made everything hilarious. Little things, like the testing of the anti-grav potion & it's aftereffects, sending Minions out to find a unicorn, and stealing a shrink ray, are friggin' comedy gold. Everyone was spot-on in voicework so no one felt like they were put in there simply to have a recognizable name attached. I would've liked to have seen a few more of his mad scientist exploits, but there's not a whole lot I would've changed about the movie. Russell Brand as Dr. Nefario is hilariously awesome in his ineptitude.

The kicker is that this movie was screened in 3D, and you can tell there are moments in there that take full advantage of the format--the roller coaster and anything in Gru's lab stand out for me. It's a bit rough around the edges and in some parts the "close" visuals were a little blurry but if you want to shell out for 3D go for it. It's not Clash of the Titans. Otherwise you should be cool with a regular screening.

Take your kids, lovers, parents, landlords, whoever. You'd have to be a complete chode to not walk out smiling. And stick around through the credits for some more Minion fun.

    See it. See it now!

Wonderful movie, the girls (especially the little one) were indeed very cute. A lot of great gags and even more heart. My g/f and I both liked DM better than Toy Story 3. Go now, I guarantee it'll leave you all warm and fuzzy inside. I mean FLUFFY!

This looks pretty funny, I'll probably check it out. All I know is, those Cinniminions at IHOP are good:p
