I really really want to like this game, but it's so frustratingly hard! I've been following a IGN.com guide that I printed out, but it's not helping too much - the dang save points are so spread out apart I end up dying and have to go back and replay so much again.

Any pointers or advice? How important is it to save the straggling survivors you come across?

So far I've been able to get to Case 1-4, but can't get back to a save point or the Security Office.

What level are you? The game gets more playable when you get over level 10. I suggest going for the Zombie Genocide achievement you'll rack of the EXP like mad and if you pull it off you'll get the Mega Buster gun and that makes life soooooo much easier.

I'm at either 7 or 8 right now. I've had to replay the beginning so many times I've leveled up a few times just by snapping those photos of the first 2 survivors on the rooftop!

The Mega Buster gun...does it have unlimited ammo? Any suggestions on where to start trying to get that achievement? I mean, the weapons seem to go really fast and it's not always easy to find effective weapons or even health once you start to take a beating.

Dead Rising is so fucking frustrating. I stopped playing that game for its crappy save points. It made me restart of the beginning, even though I saved! Twice! Fuck Capcom and its garbage save systems.

If you save on the game over screen it restarts the story. Not saving on the game over screen let's you reload from the previous save. Capcom didn't make that clear enough.

All I know is that I got way more concerned about my health and dying in Dead Rising than I ever have in a RE game, and I think that has to do with the save system.

The save system is frustratingly hard, but it really adds a life or death aspect to the game.

I still need to go pick up a new copy of Dead Rising, I was never able to finish it before I let a friend borrow it and it got stolen when his apartment was broken into.

I haven't played that game since late last year or so, but I actually really enjoyed the fact that it was challenging. One general piece of advice that I would give early on is: live defensively. Find the areas that have wine, orange juice, or milk, and always know which of these places is closest to you at a given point in time. If you always have 4 or 5 of those in your inventory, anyway, then you can survive a good, long while even in bad situations. Also, obviously, be conservative, save early and often, and if you think that you made a huge mistake, then don't save (b/c you can only save on one save slot, right?). Saving frequently helps here. Regarding those bastards that drive around with the machine gun in the middle of the mall, kill them as soon as they appear each time that they appear (there is an uzi right near where you start out that you can use to take out the machine gunner, and once you kill him, take his gun, and the other guys are a cake walk). Doing this will make life really easy for you in the long run, as that route is really efficient for getting from one place to another (and it gets you right to a huge stash of wine right near the first mini-boss guy that you fight). Finally, regarding the people that you save, this affects the ending. I saved enough to get the best ending, even though I didn't even come close to saving everybody, but you can technically "beat" the game without saving anyone, I think. . .though the ending probably sucks.

i had the same problem when i started, its not even worth trying to complete the story mode until you get to level 20 imo.

you'll have more health, run faster and be able to kill zombies with your bare hands after you unlock some stuff. just play, die, save and end. repeat until you are one tough SOB.

Mega Buster has 300 shots and is in the security room so you can go back and re-load when you will. But it kills most everything in one shot.

The pipe is a good weapon. You can swing it fast and it does good damage.

I forget what it’s called but the achievement for spending X number of hours inside is easy. Just park Frank in a bathroom or the security room and go fix something to eat.

Thanks guys for all of the advice. I'm gonna keep re-playing the beginning again again until I get around level 20. At least it's fun killing the zombies with whatever you can get your hands on. I guess I'll focus on some of the achievements while I do that. I got the achievement last night for putting masks on at least 10 zombies...fun!

Can you ever kill all the zombies inside the mall near the start of the game? They seem to keep showing up after I've left that area and return.

    What's up, Flywheels?

Dead Rising is an excellent game that is VERY hard when you first start playing it.
To get the most out of it you really need to play it multiple times.

The save system can be frustrating, but it lends some actual jeopardy to your actions. You may not have enough health and ammo to complete your objectives and that is something that is commonly not done in games these days.

The only thing that I actually think is a fault is the "Save Stats and Exit" option on the game over screen. That option does not accurately let the player know that he or she is about to end the game and restart with a character at that level.

Seeing as you are not that far into it, I would use the "Save Stats and Exit" option. If you are level 10-12 the game gets a little easier but is still challenging.

Start the game again with your leveled up Frank and play through with the following methods.
    Playthrough 1
    1. Ignore all the "scoops" and focus on the "cases". Everyone else can die! :lolol
Seriously, only rescue people if it is convenient to do so. Don't go out of your way.
    2. The one exception to this is killing Adam the Clown in Wonderland Plaza.
There are cop zombies right before you find him and they always drop guns.
Stay away from him, then when he starts to blow up his poison balloon shot the balloon then shoot him as he recovers. It helps to go into the options and change where your aim is from "player faces" to "camera".
After he is dead the area continually spawns the minichainsaws he was carrying.
They are arguably the best weapon in the game and take down the bosses in one to two hits. Also, rescue Otis' friend and he will show you a shortcut between Wonderland Plaza and Paradise Plaza.
(It is a little confusing -he takes you to the rest room and says "This is as far as I can take you." But if you jump on the sink and press 'B', you will climb through the air duct to the restroom near the security room and everyone you are escorting will follow.)

Was #2 long enough? It's important to kill Adam every playthrough because he nets the chainsaws, the shortcut, and Clowns do not deserve to live. Ever.

    3. After you follow the 'cases', abandon Isabella and fly away with whatever survivors you picked up. The reason for this is if you stay with Isabella on the last case new enemies appear that are much harder than the zombies. Plus, this will give you one of the "bad" endings that you probably wanted to see anyway.

Now, restart your game with your leveled up Frank.
    Playthrough 2
This time ignore everything I just said and ignore everything else in the game.
    1. Go to the parking lot and drive the red car into the security tunnel.
    2. Make laps around the security tunnel and run over zombies until you get to the white car.
    3. Abandon your soon to be dead red car and repeat step 2 with your white car.
    4. Abandon the white car and Pick up the box truck. Drive that around for a few laps and then drive it outside the red car will have respawned.
    5. Repeat steps 1 through 4 ad nauseum until you have the Zombie Hunter and the Zombie Genocider achievements.
Do not end the game once you have the achievement! You need to go the full 72 hours! You can even keep doing it after you get the achievement and try to get Frank to level 50 if you want.
    Playthrough 3
    1. Pick up your Real Megabuster!
    2. Follow the cases and scoops. Kill Adam as the shortcut and chainsaws are always helpful.
    3. Do not abandon Isabella and prepare for the fun that is Overtime Mode.

Can you tell I like this game?
Also, make sure to dress Frank in the most ridiculous outfit you can before you end the game so when you restart he is wearing a dress or something. It's always fun to see Frank in a dress saying "I've covered wars, you know?" :lol

Thanks Smasher...that info should help out quite a bit.

Since I'm taking a break from Halo 3 at the moment, I'll give your advice a try this evening. I believe my wife has to work late tonight so it should give me some time to advance through your "play through 1" senario.

    I hope it helps.

I think it makes the game more fun if you play through once when Frank is at low power. You really get a sense of overwhelming dread from what the game throws at you.

Once you get to level 50, Frank will be a powerhouse and you can just have fun while getting achievements and stuff. Frank will learn some wrestling moves not to mention getting Mega Man's Megabuster, Guile's Flashkick, and Zangief's Spinning Lariat. It definitely makes you more powerful and you can run around in confidence.

The main thing to remember is if you get an achievement that opens an item (Carjacker, Zombie Genocider, etc) you must finish that game. You can just return to the security room or the helipad and let the time reach 72 hours if you want.

I think this game and Halo 3 are the only games that actually give you in-game stuff based on achievements. I can't think of a better use for achievements than that.

No. You have to let the timer run to 72 hours to get the achievement related item.
If you get the Zombie Genocider achievement and then hit "Save Stats and Exit" there will be no Mega Buster waiting for you in the security room. :(

Despite being yelled at last night by my wife for staying up late playing DR, I did make some good progress. Something happened and I missed the 3rd case, but I did engage the 4th case before I called it quits.

    Couple of questions.

    1) If you get abducted by those raincoat wearing cultists, can you ever escape? The only weapon I can ever find when I climb out of the box is a stupid step ladder! Just curious, but I did manage to plow them all down w/ my SMG anyways.

    2) What is the easiest way to kill the convicts in the park? I managed to kill them all and save Sophie, but it didn't register as an Achievement when I killed them. Perhaps one of them was killed when they wrecked the jeep?

    3) Playthrough #2 - So I'm not supposed to worry about following the cases or the scoops? How do I gain access to the maintenance tunnels and or the parking lot?

You do realize that a couple is two, right? :)

It is possible to escape, but I never did. I would just start over from my last save and try again.

Aside from waiting until you have the Mega Buster, the easiest way is have one or two of the minichainsaws and hang out by the trees. The convicts will hit the trees or the wall and two swipes each with the chainsaw will take out all of them. I think you have to actually get in the jeep and drive it to get the achievement (it is called 'Carjacker'). Don't worry, once you get the Mega Buster, you can do it again and it will be even easier than the chainsaws.

Keep in mind this is just a suggestion of how to play, you can do it however you like. But, I was thinking that after you play it once and enjoy it, spend your next time just leveling Frank up. That makes it easier to get the other achievements because Frank will have more inventory slots (you can give the survivors guns and such) and will be a lot stronger. Also, it makes the enemies in Overtime a lot easier to deal with.

Just run out of the mall (exit by the cinema) keep following the wall to the right and you will come to an outside tunnel. Follow that and you will find a red convertible and a motorcycle outside the maintenance tunnel. Get in the convertible and drive down into the maintenance tunnel to start running over 55,000 plus zombies to get your Zombie Genocider achievement. I think you can search Zombie Genocider on Youtube to see how others did it.
