Dave Cockrum, the artist who helped relaunch the X-Men in 1975 died this morning due to complications from diabetes. :(

He hasn't done much lately, but in the 70s he did a very well-regarded run on Legion of Super-Heroes. After leaving that book he joined Len Wein at Marvel in relaunching the X-Men franchise, which had been running reprints since 1970. Among other things, he was the main creator behind Storm, Nightcrawler, and Colossus. He had two runs on Uncanny X-Men, from 1975-77 and again from 1981-83. Most recently he was going to contribute the art to a Joss Whedon story in Giant-Size X-Men #3, but had to drop out because of health problems.

He was an extremely talented artist, and it's safe to say he'll be missed.

    :(

One of my favorite Artists. He's the guy I measure every single X-Men artist to.

Man, I hate to hear that. He helped create two of my all time favorites collosus and nightcrawler! I regard his run right up there with Byrne's run as they both kind of intertwined with each other.

Funny how these days 63 seems like a young age to die. I don't know much about Cockrum aside from his work. I don't know what his life was like - friends, family, illness, etc. I hope what he had was a happy one. But his work will outlive him by several generations, and his work, and the work derived from it, has and will bring joy to millions upon millions of people, the vast majority of whom will never even know his name. As legacies go, it's not Ghandi, but it's pretty damn good.

Alpha Flight, Hellfire Club, and Proteus were Claremont and Byrne. Caliban was initially concieved by Claremont and Byrne but Cockrum was the one who did the first comic featuring the character, though, so I'll give you that.

Still though, Cockrum surpasses Byrne as far as involvement in creating important characters and memorable character designs go.
