because Bay and ILM could care less about what color they were before they were cars and only important characters get color.

Well in the DotM prequels they have color and different designs but the reason when Team Prime arrives in the 1st movie they look like protoforms bascally is because they needed to prepare to scan new alt modes when they arrived.

It hasn't been disgusted because we've been too busy discussing it.

Well, there was a valid explanation. Then ROTF and DOTM kind of screwed it up.

Just for clarification, let it be noted that really the only character we see in their CYBERTRONIAN MODE is Megatron in the first film and Sentinel Prime on the moon. The Autobots arrive to Earth in Transformers (Ironhide in the pool, Jazz on the car dealership roof, Optimus in the field), the Decepticon protoforms in Egypt and Chicago are all PROTOFORMS. There's a difference. Cybertronian modes are transformable, they are essentially alien versions of their Earth vehicles, complete with colour, robot modes and alt modes.

For example, this fellow here on the site has created his own Cybertronian modes for many of the movieverse characters. (http://www.tfw2005.com/boards/transformers-fan-art/557762-transformers-back-earth.html). As you can see, we have a red and blue Optimus Prime who transforms into a massive Cybertronian truck, similar to his Earth Peterbilt mode. Ironhide is a black truck-ish vehicle. Bumblebee is a small yellow Cybertronian vehicle. This is a CYBERTRONIAN MODE. Of which, as I said, we only see Megatron and Sentinel in CYBERTRONIAN MODES in the movies.

What you see in the first movie here (Transformers Movie Blu Ray Images - Transformers Movie - TFW2005.COM) are PROTOFORMS. Bare-bone editions of the characters that are meant for interstellar travel, transforming only into meteor-shaped objects for travelling. They then scan Earth vehicles to transition into EARTH MODE.

So really, the question here is 'why are protoforms so bland and plain?'. I don't really know if there's any "official" reason to it given in the movies.

The official movie guide states "chameleons by nature, Transformers are constantly adapting their forms either to blend in on other worlds or to traverse the vast distances between them. In preparation for deep space travel, a Transformer will shed its current exo-structure, returning to its most basic form (protoform), before transforming into a protective transition mode. Transformers can scan a vehicle or life form and reformat their own protoform, adopting a new exo-structure".

So, a protoform is the most basic form of a Transformer, essentially. "Raw", if you will. They're all generic, looking almost identical (more or less) in these forms. It's not until they scan a vehicle (be it Cybertronian or Earth based) that they really get a unique physical 'identity'. Why be all bright and colourful if space travel is just going to burn/chip off your new paintjob? ;)  Being a bland gray/silver robot just means that you can become anything, basically. With all of the science-fiction explanations you can give here, anything is possible.

And really, the movies aren't the first or only Transformers medium to show protoforms as being vague, generic beings. Beast Wars, Animated and TFP also do it.

Think of it this way: Protoforms are human beings without clothes on. In the nude, humans look more similar to each other, with some exceptions (skin colour, anatomy, etc.). But then protoforms scan a vehicle and are able to transform, they get colour, an identity. This is the equivalent of those nude human getting all dressed up in thousands of different combinations of clothes. Suddenly those two guys who looked similar to each other are different. One has his hair slicked back and is wearing a nice dress suit and tie. The other is wearing shorts and a ballcap with a bright pink shirt. Strange analogy, I know, but I think it works.

The Cybertronian modes are a plan? WE SHOULD HAVE KNOWN.

But seriously, those are protoforms. Modes for space. Sentinel and Megatron were the only ones in their Cybertronian modes, and silver is just Megatron's natural color.
