Have been wondering, has there ever been any indication of some form of payment which Cybertronians use in exchange for goods? Or do they seem to favour trades or swapping of goods or simply offer energon for something?

How did Swindle often get payment from his customers for his goods in Animated i wonder?

Energon was used as a currency in G1, wasn't it?

If memory serves correctly, Animated Swindle mentioned something about 'credits' in one of the comics.

I think it was Energon chips in the episode "The Gambler".

It seems like their economy is based on energy, which has an inherent value to them, much as ours is/was based on gold or other precious metals. And then everything is probably valued in terms of energon.

I'm sure he take barter items as well. Plus if any advanced alien worlds have an established currency that he can use to buy things, then I guess their money is good, since he can use it to buy materials.

In the Transtech world they have credits, as they consider it silly to have explosive money.

Energon chips were a form of currency to the best of my beliefs.

In the G1 cartoon, The Gambler it was Energon chips. Some variant of Energon currency has been used in G1 cartoons and comics ever since, although non-descript "credits" have turned up from time to time. (Since Energy is more precious than "precious metals" to the Cybertronians -- war or no war -- that makes sense.) Shannix must've come exclusively from the UK comics.

Yes, unless the EU decides to marinate Euros in wine prior to circulation, Energon currency is the only kind that will blow up in your face when met with open flame. Or laser fire.
(Even The Dark Knight's Joker wouldn't be crazy enough to light up a stash of this! His half may be at the bottom, but his bottom would be on what's left of the ceiling!)

Swindle, on the other hand, will take anything that passes as currency in a given location, or accept a trade of something of value to him (such as a toaster for Megatron's right arm, as mentioned in his Marvel Transformers Universe profile).

In g1 I have heard energon chips but I've also heard credits. I guess it depends on the generation.

Megatron has only one currency: PAIN! (or was that the chief export of Chuck Norris. I forget)

    Energon chips it is, then!

In one of the TFCC fictions, it's talked about how the vast majority of the multiversal Transformers use Energon in some form as currency, while the Transtech universe which had no depleting war, does not.

In Animated, credits are mentioned several times by both sides throughout the series and the comic(s), which was another universe which didn't have a war to depletion on its Cybertron.

So, the answer is, depends on the universe.

Sorry if it sounds like I'm parroting everybody but I always assumed it was Energon Chips as demonstrated by the Gambler for the animated TF series (80's), like if chocolate coins had any value as the TF wiki said. I don't read much of the comics nowadays but I think they were called Shannix or something.

    It depends on the series.

With Swindle I wouldn't be shocked if he doesn't have currency from several different worlds since he will use whatever it takes to make the deal.

I never cared for the idea of some form of Energon being a currency. Energon is seen as a power source, a drink, food, and currency? Why use it for all that when Cybertron is having a depletion of Energon and then will need to take some from other planets to survive

Energy is just such a good trading commodity so it's no surprise it would be used as a form of currency. Just have to look at how valuable fuel is in our own world economy. For Transformers it's essentially their food and drink and such things have also been deeply engrained in our world as trading goods. So there's really no surprise TFs would use energon as a currency. I'm sure if we hadn't developed actual money we'd be using food and fuel more as direct trading items in our everyday life too. Presumably this could mean that TFs don't really have a normal currency but just trade items or services for other items. Actually, being a Transformer would suit that idea perfectly as a TF could use their alt form or abilities to specialise in certain trades of skill in exchange for other services or items.

Optimus had to scrape together some small energon cubes to buy microchips as they had very little else they could use to trade with for the components they needed. It's just a widely accepted form of currency across various systems.

Shannix might be another preferred off-world currency, of even just attractive to bounty hunters and underworld scum, which is why that particular type was offered on the head of Galvatron and then Rodimus Prime and then back on Cyclonus and Scourge.
Basically I'd say that if you're going to be part of a huge galactic community you'll have to either find a trading item or currency that is desired by as many planets and species as possible or you'll just have to carry many different types of currency around with you, or have somewhere which will change your cash to a different type. It's not that different on Earth really.

Since energon chips were used in the G1 cartoon, does that mean in TFTM Kup and Hot Rod were feeding the Sharkticons money?

Could be. Remember, Hotrod did say "This is getting expensive". Or maybe there's different grades of energon and what Kup and Hotrod were giving away was the yummy type of energon while the stuff used for trading is a highly refined grade and thus worth more, and maybe can be converted and/or broken down into other types of energon.
Can't just assume there's only one type of energon, just as there's several types of fuel and food and energy.
