Maybe someone might have started this before... but I thought I'd ask this question. After what has been about 22 years or so, what do you guys think of the new Soundwave on TV?

Since I first saw the episode Titans, I missed Frank Welker's voice acting for him. Still, Robert O. Smith does sound a little promising. So what are your views on this latest reincarnation of our favourite cassette player warrior?

Comparatively, he's a motormouth, with actual inflection in his voice. Cooler alt mode. He battled Optimus to a draw when they met, where in G1 would be no contest.

They went to the trouble of putting an effect on his voice, which is a nice nod.

The fact that he actually said "peace out", totally cancels out any coolness.

I hate it when writers of kids shows try to write in pop culture vernacular, let alone when they attribute that dialog to what could have been a mysterious character.

So um, yeah... I hate it.

Ditto. I can't stand when they make characters (not just on TF shows) say cheesy little slang terms just for the sake of having them say it.

Sometimes it works, like BW Rattrap, whose constant use of slang actually fit the character, and sometimes it just looks way too out-of-place and silly, like the above-mentioned Soundwave quote.

After seeing him... he totally blows! I was so hoping for a G1 homage. but instead we get this lame one.

I think they could have been a very cool character, with alot of promise, but they didn't act on it.
the Spy thing should have been played to the max, he should have been broght in earlyer in the show so he could have been doing the sping on the Autobots to get info on the keys.

"He's just trippen cause he got served!"

I love it. If he just had some generic Rapper voice, I'd probably hate it. But because he delivers the lines in that mechanical, monotone voice, its hilarious. And I love it.

    Peace Out!

I would like it if I thought it was intended to be a funny juxtaposition. But I doubt it. Just another case of writing down to kids, if you ask me. It's unintentionally funny, I admit, but I've had about enough unintentionally funny anime dialog.

BTW, what's up with everybody on Giant Planet having a Celtic accent? Is that the deal now, everyone from a different planet is a different ethnicity? What's next, Stereotypical Asian Planet?

    I can see it now:

    "The brockade is puhfectry regal!"

Nah. Nobody would be stupid enough to do that!

I love the guy too! About the pop culture slang. They didn't add it for no reason. I figured it was blatantly obvious, but he talks like a radio host. Also, considering the animators have him pulling out a microphone on several ocasions, I don't think you can really blame the US writers at all. The writing matches the way he is portrayed in the show.

If you want to blame someone for the things that cause Soundwave to suck to you, try the japanese writers and animators.

    "Peace out!"

At least by the sound of things they didn't overdo his attitude. Otherwise, I would have hated this homage. Still, Cybertron Soundwave is pretty cool, in a way. Imagine if his Cassetticons like Ravage, Rumble, Frenzy and Buzzsaw made their comeback, in addition to Squawktalk, Beastbox, Overbite and Slugfest?

    That's a good point.

But I think you can do the radio host thing without having to say "peace out, etc."

You're right though, a lot of it is the japanese production team. Which is why I hope the next series will be written in the US, not in Japan.

It occurs to me the voice sounds like it's G1 Soundwave doing an impression of Ryan Seacrest. Using lingo he learned watching "Poser Mobile" TV ads.

Love this Soundwave, he's funny, cool and sinister at the same time.:thumb

And something tells me that he's a double homage *COUGH*Junkions*COUGH*.
