Guys, check this out, it's a custom GI Joe game in the vein of 90's fighting side scrollers! Pretty much the coolest fan made project ever – old school G.I. Joe video game | Generals Joes - A blog about the importance (or unimportance) of little plastic men GI Joe Game Video
An interesting idea, but there is way, way too much inconsistency in the quality of the graphics. They're clearly cannibalizing different things instead of creating everything, or even a moderate amount, from scratch. The characters look great, but that's because their Marvel vs Capcom character reskins, as are the vehicles. The backgrounds, presentation, vehicles and other supporting art just looks terrible together since they clearly aren't being cobbled together from the same quality sprites as the characters.
Doesn't excuse poor design choices, lack of cohesiveness in graphics or the lack of quality presentation. "Fans" have been doing some amazing things for the genres they love, especially when it comes to gaming. While this is interesting, and they certainly hit the "G.I. Joe" aspect right on the head, the "game" aspect is pretty inconsistent and generally not good. EDIT: Things like Abobo's Big Adventure, Super Mario Crossover, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 HD, Double Dragon Forever, and Duke Nukem 3D Reloaded (though that was eventually canceled) all spring to mind as fan made, but much higher quality than is being displayed in this project.
To be fair Mugen stuff like that tends to look atrociously bad. I was really hoping this would be a mod for a decent more recent game. No such luck though.
While Mugen stuff can be relatively terrible at times, I have seen some that have turned out pretty awesome. Especially when people were reskinning the MvC stuff into expanding MvC2 to have like 100 playable guys, with new backgrounds. Or the guy who remade MK Trilogy to fix the balancing issues between different character iterations. If they had used consistent Capcom and even SNK sprites to edit, then the whole thing would blend well together. But when you have Atari, Capcom, photographic and solid flat sprites all mixed in a single scene, it's not going to come off well.
Agree'd it was bugging the hell out of me. IMO a 8bit/16bit makeover both graphics and music would do this wonders I'd throw money down on it if it were on say XBL for instance.
I really haven't seen one that doesn't look wonky. Could that be because I've never seen a "finished" one, maybe. Probably true. But I have no love for this type of game.
Something like this should've been made years ago. Yeah, it looks rough but I still loved the idea and it brings back great memories. A Joe game that's kind of half Contra and half TMNT would be pretty sick.
