Yep folks, I have crabs. Worse yet, I got them from my older sister. She got them in Florida from some random dude and brought them back to me. I'm not sure what to do, my life will never be the same. My wife is pissed.

Seriously though, my sister went on vacation and brought us a pair of hermit crabs. I had them when I was younger and, well, it wasn't a success story. I read up a bit online and hear they can live up to 32 years in captivity.

Anyone have protips for me, or success stories for a morale booster? I want these guys to live forevAr!

are they the little hermit crabs that fit in your hand? If so they have kits at local stores that work very well. You usually give them sand, a sponge in water, and if you put a bigger shell in the terrarium, they will move into it and grow bigger.

Bravo. That first line wanted me to drop the sex jokes but noooo, bait and switch.

Put them in a very hot, almost boiling and somewater salty bath. They like the bubbles so make sure you turn the heat up and leave the lid on :D

My lobster liked the same thing. He even screamed with excitement when I put him in. You might find them a little dry when they come out, so I find a little butter makes them feel better.

Do not forget to properly protect their weak point. Otherwise, they might sustain massive damage.

Paint up their shells (before they use them, obviously). See if they have a favorite color.

    Arrange this, but with crabs.

As they're hermit crabs, they have better armour, so the awesome will last longer, and thus be more awesome.

I had several of them as a kid and learned the following:
-the larger one(s) if housed with smaller tank mates will eat/attack them
-once they out grow their current shell they will walk out of it and go "shell hunting" for a new one. Keep several empty shells in the tank for them to try.
-they pinch and hard, avoid fleshy body parts

Try Google for care tips, mine lived for six years.

DO NOT put store bought beach sand in the tank, my sister found out the hard way that they don't do well with it. Her boyfriend gave her a HC and after six months she tried a store's packaged beach sand, it had something in it that killed the little critter.
