we know that prime is a rank, as in optimus prime, and sentinal prime. and at one point, sentinal was sentinal minor. so we can conclude that minor is somewhere below prime..

...but when it comes to ultra magnus. is his rank "ultra" because he is the supreme commander of autobots? so say if optimus because supreme commander, would his name in theory be ultra optimus?

and what about jazz? does he just choose not to use his rank in his name?

WELL given that all the other titles come AFTER the given name, Magnus could be the title (which, much like Prime is a Latin term IIRC).

maybe Jazz has no rank because he has different training. afterall, the guys seemed to be in a military camp, while Jazz seems to have trained as a ninja-not as a military officer, but a living weapon instead

I don't. We've had TFs named like that before. Remember Overlord's nipple-masters? Or, maybe once you reach a certain rank you can make up your own name.

Jazz is most likely just Jazz because he's a soldier. His elite guard badge is his symbol of rank, he doesn't need a new name.

From how I see it so far:

    Ultra Magnus

    Prime

    Elite Guard soldiers

    Regular Autobots

    Citizens

Makes me wonder if the Decepticons have/had any ranking system or just the leader and a second-in-command?

Elite Guard doesn't necessarily mean command. Sentinel was clearly on a command path while Jazz and the others may have been on a warrior path.

The reason Im inclined to think that 'ultra' is the title portion is that its more applicable to other bots such Ultra Optimus, Ultra Sentinel etc in addition its meaning like Prime is more appropriate for a rank.

As for why other elite guard such as Jazz dont use a rank title I am in the camp that he didnt pursue officer training when Bumblebee and co were asked what positions they were after Wasp said Elite Guard command while BB and Ironhide said trooper (well BB said warrior but meh) Im thinking that if circumstances were different Wasp would have been an 'Acadamy bot' like Optimus, Sentinel and Elita.

I've been thinking about how the ranks work. I think the way Cybertron works is something like this:

Commander in Chief - Ultra Magnus - no title, he's held the position since the Great War which probably means he predates the Elite Guard.
Generals - unrevealed, I would bet "Maximus". So if Sentinel Prime were promoted, Sentinel Maximus.
    Captains - the Primes.
Lieutenants - again, unrevealed, but based on Elita, perhaps "One", as in, "Number One". So Elita would have been a slightly more junior officer compared to the Primes.
Sergeant Major - I would imagine you've got two positions for Sarge. Major and Minor. Optimus Major, Sentinel Minor, etc.

Below that, you have Elite Guard Troopers, as well as other members of the Autobots. Then there is the neutral mass of Cybertronians, who probably elect members of the High Council. Sort of a balancing act - The Commander in Chief, Ultra Magnus, is an Autobot military officer, but the High Council are elected non-combatants so they aren't a part of the military system.

(Of course, I could be way out and the High Council could be all veterans of the Great War)

If there is a civilian, or religious leader for the autobots, he has to be alpha trion.

And he has to turn into a popemobile.

Actually both words in his name are latin. Litterally in english his name is Beyond Great. We tend to think of Magnus as a name because of Gnaeus Pompeius Magnus, Pompey. But Magnus was just a cognomen he was given.

Theortically Ultra Magnus could be just his rank. Maybe they don't use his name in everyday usage. I suppose we can't know for sure until someone talks to UM in a less formal way.

I think that is highly likely.

And everyone else - remember Longarm PRIME is Head of Intelligence. That implies that Prime is either pretty senior, or there's are BIG differences WITHIN the rank.

Regardless of his rank, Jazz is probably just the kind of bot that doesn't care for pretentious titles.

Like I have some friends with PhDs. They'd find it weird if I was calling them 'Doctor' all the time.

I'm of the opinion that just a name like Jazz and Longarm is just the given name frome going thru Autoboot camp. I think there are a few ranks we're missing from the big picture, but that we've also been given one that we haven't considered. (but was mentioned earlier in this thread)

I think being in the Autobots with a regular name means your at the bottom rung of the ladder. A regular name in the Elite Guard means you're at the bottom rung of the Officer ladder.

A name with Minor would be Like a Sargent in the non-officer branch given how Sentinel was portayed and that he didn't seem to have his Elite Guard badge.

A name with One in it might mean a Jr. Lieuteant rank but that's hard to judge as neither Optimus or Sentinel were refered to as a Prime durring the flashback with Elita-One. She might have been their superior or maybe just under them if they had one. Tho given the characters, I'd say that the events in Autoboot Camp seem to take place after the events that saw the birth of Blackarachnia, one would think that if Minor wasn't an officer rank outside of the Elite Guard, than it was one step below it. (but then how does Jazz fit in then?)

Maybe the Ninjas don't have a rank, but that would seem unlikely. Plus, I don't think that anybot who worked hard to earn a rank in the Elite Guard would brush aside that title for no reason. (or no good reason)

I like the idea for a Major rank as in Rodimus Major as it gives a nice rank to fill the gap between Minor and Prime. I'd also like the Maximus as a rank inbetween a Prime and the Ultra. (if they were to further the ranking system)

Optimus Prime refers to Ultra Magnus as Commander in "misson accomplished" So it should be "Commander Ultra Magnus"

I'm not sure about military ranks, but, let's say you had a group of normal soldiers, and a group of commandos or special forces. Would you address the commando with any different title than the normal soldier? I can see Jazz as a specialist working with the elite guard but not necessarily being of high rank, just high skill.
