So I've only recently gotten the 3rd party fever. I'm working on completing Herc, and have a small list of figures I need to acquire somehow.

I'm wondering, though, is there a comprehensive list of products from 3rd party manufacturers that are 'must have's' for people? Or even a thorough list of all 3rd party releases?

I'd really like to expand my collection with more 3rd party figures, but only have a small idea of what has been released.

Many of the cooler third-party toys are upgrades to existing figures. So, really, what's "must have" depends greatly on what you have, what your personal collecting philosophy is, and how much you're willing to pay.

For instance, City Commander is considered pretty seminal as far as third party toys go (it's really the toy that made third party into a "thing" - though, FansProject's Cliffjumper kit was really the "first" third party kit that mainstream fans saw), but it doesn't do you much good if you don't own Classics Ultra Magnus or aren't willing to shell out for it.

Explorer and Munitioner enable the formation of Colossus, but don't work unless you have the appropriate Energon or ROTF Bruticus Maximus molds to combine them with. Likewise with Protector and Classics Rodimus (though, at this point it's hard to imagine that you don't own at least SOME copy of that mold), Battle Tanker and RTS Optimus Prime, etc.

Perfect Effect's Scouting Force and other figures are pretty cool, but don't fit everyone's aesthetic preferences. Hard to call them "must-haves" unless you dig the designs.

It might be best if you poked around this website's "Third Party & KO Transformers Resources" section to see pics, and then checked out the appropriate review threads to get a sense for what you like and how much you like them.

I only go with "Classics" 3rd Party stuff, decided it can get even more out of hand if I dive into others. Some of my favorites

-Venksta's (Renderform) upgrades are some of the best IMO.
-As others have said, prettymuch all of the FP stuff.
-Both the Autobot and D-Con "Cassette" updates by Perfect Effect are great in my book.
-Maketoys Minibots, and igear minibots have both been great so far.

Fansproject and Headrobots won't steer you wrong. Haven't bought a ton of I-Gear stuff, but I dug Rager and the recent Weapon Upgrade set. I don't buy a lot of the CrazyDevy stuff, but I do buy the bigger combiner swords when they're on the cheap. The Junkion Blacksmith Devastator upgrade was good for what it was. The Maketoys Battle trailer was good, but probably overpriced.

I'd add FP Warbot Defender to the list Boutyan posted. And if you like the look of it, the iGear Kup Cygar head set is pretty good as well.

This, minus crossfire and protector. Bruticus looks shittier every day closer I get to completing Giant. Never been a fan of protector, I'd get mp rodimus instead as long as size doesn't bother you.

    FP Munitioner, Explorer
    City Commander
    Venksta's kits
    G3 trailer
    Delicate Warrior
    PE Ejector/Rewinder
PE Shadow Warriors (repainted into Frenzy and Rumble)

If you're looking to round out a Classics collection, I'd say:
    Warbot Defender
    Headrobots Hardhead
    City Commander
    Protector
    PE Ejector, Rewinder
Igear Rager, either Spray or the other version
    Headrobots Bludgeon kit
    FP Insecticons
FP Munitioner + Explorer (with the other Bruticus bots of course)
PE Laser, Buzzer, Rumble, Frenzy, Reflector

FP Warbot Defender, Munitioner & Explorer and TFC Hercules are must haves. TFC Hercules with its few QC issues definitely still worth the money imo.

    City Commander
    G3 Trailer
    Protector

That's it. Those are "must-have." Everything else is subjective.

There is no such thing as must-have, it's all subjective.

City Commander kinda started this whole thing, and is great until we get a more accurate Magnus. Shadow Commander is more timeless I think.
    Defender - I'm not a fan.
    Superion Add-on - I really like this
    Bruticus add-on - I love this too.
Non Bruticus add-on set (I can't remember their names) - awesome molds, worth having to see them displayed in robot mode.
Hercules - if you can afford it, I think it's brilliant
PE Reflector - I love these, some people say they are too small
PE cassette guys - I love all these.
Sonicron - it has problems, but I'm the guy who likes it, just for the alt. mode.
MP3 Starscream Coronation Set - This is awesome, was it IGear?
    Mini Warriors - Love these
    Protector - big disappointment
Shadow Scyther - Il ike the mold, I just think it made a lousy Rodimus, this works for me
    IGear Kup Head - Awesome
Venksta add-ons - Goldbug, Darkwing, Skyfall all look awesome now
Dr. Wu Wheeljack add-on - show accurate
Giant - not a massive fan, but I might go yellow for G2 shelf.
Calloway Customs Punch / CPunch, Pyro heads - these MAKE these figures.
Xovergen stupid Prime - piece of shit
MMC Hearts of Steel Prime - lovely
Cyclops - looks and feels freaking awesome
Hexatron - this will be amazing
    PP05 - still waiting...
Coneheads - Well, Hasbro wasn't making them
PP Thundercracker - Well, Takara did it far too dark
Faith Leader - I like it. I don't think Igear should have made it though...risky!
FP Insecticons - I'm not a huge fan of them as Transformers, but as figures they display very well
Cliffjumper - the FP set is ridiculous now, I'm happy with the Devil Horn upgrade
Impossible Toys Arcee - massive piece of shit, same witht he Nightbird
Impossible Toys - I like their Animated figures, and some of the Quints look nice, but I haven't bought any of them.
Headrobots Hardhead - awesome, looking forward to future releases.
    Drift Swords - Chrome goodness

I personally avoid ALL G1 add-ons, if I want G1 to look good I buy Classics. I like my G1 as God / Yoke intended, warts and all.

I'm sure there are loads I've missed, that's just what I've got or plan to get.
