Something's wrong with my computer. I put it to sleep before work and then tapped it to wake up.. and... it runs this fan- like it's thinking.. then makes a tick tick sound... then the fan stops.. then the fan starts up again.. then the tick tick sound.

    later..
It's at some kind of blue screen now.. "Phoenix Award Workstation BIOS CMOS SETUP UTILITY" thing.. I don't know if my father made that come up or what... and it's not making the sounds now but at that screen. I don't know what to touch or do..

    It's a GM5072 Gateway, 2006

    Please help.

edit- got ahold of someone. the hard drive went up.

...my last back ups were made in March.
I JUST BOUGHT DVDS YESTERDAY TO MAKE NEW BACK UPS BUT DIDNT AND... )*&#)(&&*&@*&@*&@**@. *FACE DESK*

8( *woes* any idea on how to possibly get this working just long enough to make backups. Plz ;; haaaaalp.

I've only seen this work once, but I had a hard drive crash back in 95-96 and my friend's dad who was a computer tech came over and spun the drive like a top one time. Got it up long enough to boot the machine and save what I needed to save. I've also heard of putting the drive in your freezer for a bit and then trying to hook it up and see if that works. However if your computer is under warranty, I wouldn't really suggest doing any of that, otherwise your out the price of the harddrive as well.

If there's something really important on the drive, there are companies who specialize in recovering data from harddrives that have malfunctioned. This service usually runs in the $500+ range though.

i've tried the freeezer trick, worked for me.

apparently ity makes the disc shirk a tad, so it can start spinning again. maybe.

I agree - the HDD took a dump. I've also heard the freezing thing works.

Yeah. Hard drive is gone. It happened to me about three weeks ago. Still haven't gotten around to trying to recover anything from the old one, I'll have to remember that freezer trick though...

Wrap the drive in ONE papertowel and stick the drive in the freezer for two days. When you plug the drive back in be sure to put a towel under it so the condensation doesnt get into the pc.

I have used this trick multiple times and it works well until the drive heats up. So you need to move fast once you take it out of the freezer.

FREEZER IT IS THEN. 8) <3 Thanks guys. :D  I mean it.

I had my techie friend point me out a decent new harddrive, it should be here shortly. :d Bought it off some techie site. He say's he's gonna walk me through it (over the phone).

I have a plan. It's to put the new harddrive in my machine. Get it up and running (with my XP disk I got when I bought the Gateway in 2006), then put the dead harddrive in the freezer, after the given time take it out,

    THEN!!!!

Hook it up to the computer as a external hardrive (said friend is mailing me a tool to use on loan) and HOPE it lasts long enough for me to just drag all my data files (art, writing stuff, music, ect) onto the new harddrive. In theory. This should work. 8} I hope so. My art is like.. my babies.. 8{ I am attached <3.

(I mean really I had a dream about Ratrap last time I slept that's a good sign, right :D )

For the record; The warranty is only a year... seeing I bought it in 2006, it's up... That's just for the computer, though. Not sure if there's a diff for the harddrive it's self.

nope, make the disc compact or summat, so it can spin easier like.

So...would the freezer trick work for an external too? Mine crapped out on me with some pretty important stuff on there. Worth a shot I guess.

I think it will work for pretty much any type of mechanical disc drive.
