I was listening to GEEKTIME on Sirius radio today, and they were discussing some of the big comic "events" coming up this year. One that was just confirmed is Watchmen II.

I hate this idea. It's already a lock that Alan Moore won't be involved, so that automatically reduces my interest to zero.

I hate the idea of sequels to classic works, even moreso when the original creators aren't involved. "The Dark Knight Strikes Again" was kinda terrible, but at least it was Frank Miller doing it. If the original creator can't make a worthwhile sequel, it just further hammers home the point that it shouldn't have been messed with in the first place.

    Anyway, discuss.

I LOVE the first comic and movie, but.........

It's perfect how it is. I'll still try to read it (if it's ever made) just to get my opinion on it.

UGH. :banghead:  And without Alan Moore being involved this can't end well.

How the bloody hell could you make a sequel to THAT movie? Have Dr. Manhattan come back and resurect the guy with the white/black changing mask whose name I can't spell?

Isn't this the already revealed prequels? Still, bad idea period. Watchmen is over. We got lucky with a pretty good movie adaptation. Let it stand on it's own.

This fact alone completely evaporates my interest.

The only further Watchmen material I would welcome? Prequels exploring the superheroes' lives prior to the events of the original comic. Also, more Tales of the Black Freighter. Those vague descriptions of the other pirate stories make me want to see them realized.

Oh it's worse it's not a sequel it's rumored to be a prequel.....
This will be the episode 1 of comics more than likely.

Yep, it's supposed to be a prequel to the series. It's an obvious cash grab move by DC, and it will most likely be a huge seller to the general public who aren't all familiar with the disagreements between Alan Moore and DC. Not really surprised, I mean DC did have that awful sequel to Dark Knight Returns made, and I think Frank Miller just decided to screw DC with the money they paid him.

What (good) writer in their right mind would take the job? Its obviously going to be compared to Moore's work and they will look like a company stooge.

Some people don't really care, especially if enough money is involved. Supposedly Darwyn Cooke is one writer involved with one of the prequels, and if the leaked art is to be believed, DC has lined up some pretty good artists for the projects - Andy Kubert, Amanda Conner, and JG Jones. I'd think they wouldn't put some crap writer on these books, for one, without Moore, they're most likely going to try and make them as good as if Moore wrote them, because they need to sell this to the market without Moore. One good thing about the market these days, comic books rely on creators' performances to sell as much as the character itself.

Wasn't Moore considering doing some prequels before relations with DC went sour?

DK2 was better then that, Miller took DC's money and used it to publish a comic that directly shit on thier creative bankruptcy and laughed at the fact that almost everybody seems to have missed the point he was making the first time round. The really funny thing about it is that the Wednesday crowd didn't realise that and cried that it wasen't like the original, despite it being about as subtle as a brick to the face.

I know its cool to hate the dude thesedays, but I got total respect for anyone that can troll such a deserving industry at such a high level.

He does that any time he's doing a project that they want him to do and he's paid for. He turns out crap. When he wants to do it, it usually turns out better. That was why the returns sequel, and all star were so bad. But like many writers, he's lost touch with audiences. Most of his stuff these days is poor. When he became a director, he started believing his own hype.
