Inspired by the third party upgrade kits for Combiner Wars Ultra Magnus, I decided to go in an even more G1 direction.

The obvious and cheaper answer to this is to just buy Masterpiece Ultra Magnus. But, for me, he doesn't work as well with the other '86 movie characters on my shelf.

Plus I've been working at refining my 3D modeling skills and I have a Shapeways coupon.

These are all renders. They pass automated printability tests and I have some prototype pieces coming in to make sure I have my measurements right. The nice thing is that these are all replacements for friction mounted pieces or should work based on friction mounting themselves (although I plan to secure them if it fits well enough).

Under consideration: Shoulder toppers and/or a filler backpack to cover the cab. (Although I've also played with the idea of scratchbuilding a cab. Seems overkill possibly.)

Oohh, very clever hip covers. So they just slide onto the post between the thigh and the hip?

Yeah. I disassembled the hips and considered making a snap on but I was worried about transformation clearance. I thought about making new upper legs and this seemed easier and cheaper while getting most of the same effect.

First batches were done with a lighter weight chestpiece that shares design elements with heavier piece you saw.

The hinge works like a dream. The latches need more reinforcement to stay connected. The good news is this should be the trickiest fit out of everything and it only requires a modest touchup.

I'm definitely coming to you for some parts. My way is going to be a bit different but the price on the original G1 parts is a no go.

Is it possible to make the stomach wider so it hides the cab completely?

That was just a test piece for transformation and measurement. I looked at a square chest (seen in the design renders in the first post) and settled on a chest with angular abs that cover the cab but taper in some at the waist.

So I got the 3rd Party upgrade hands and my legplates. I remodeled the other stuff and ordered today.

Everything lines up properly. The back legplate tab I did fits better than the factory one. The side tab of mine is a bit too big but is as thin as I think Shapeways will allow.

The back tab is actually sturdy enough that the legplates don't flop in robot mode, which the factory plates tended to when posing him.

Would you consider adding it later for a 2.0? Would you consider doing the same with the legs, which look really good btw, and have the two rectangles as one like the toy? A toy inspired set of these parts would be great.

Can't wait to see everything together. I'm really excited about the hips covers. That is my main dislike of the figure.

He looks so much more like his massive and boxy self! Great job.

While I am interested in these upgrade parts, my biggest question is how do they affect the altmode when all are applied

The chest probably won't affect the alt mode negatively as there's a lot of clearance. The thighs? We'll see. They might have to be removed. I considered trying to integrate storage via 5mm post in those and decided I was better off not raising the cost.

I rounded prices up on Shapeways to the nearest 50 cents for the most part. If this is a cool thing that works (and is expensive just to produce), I don't want to make it more costly to produce.

That said, there's very little hollowness in these pieces. A big way to drive costs down is with hollowness and I wanted these to increase the heft of the core figure.
