Hi guys n gals, do you know what vehicles the toy combaticons were based off. I'm trying to recreate them in 3D but so far I've made onslaught and vortex by guess work.

    Cheers for the help

The best way would probably to go by screenshots from G1 of the individual characters and look for pix of the toys. It's probably your best bet. Unless someone here knows the specific vehicles (if any) they were based off (which I wouldn't be surprised if someone does). I'm done.

    Blast-Off is easy: space shuttle.
Brawl looks like a simplified Abrams to me.
Swindle was a pretty generic military jeep in the show I think, the toy is rather different.
With the other 2 I can't even go as "detailed" as with Brawl and Swindle.

swindle is in no way generic.

    from sgcollect:

    Blast Off Space Shuttle
    Brawl Leopard 1 tank
Vortex Sikorsky UH-60 Black Hawk (or GKN Westland Super Sea Lynx Mk88A) helicopter
    Onslaught Green flatbed truck w/cannon
(Vortex was depicted as a Sea Lynx helicopter in the cartoon and the comic. However, the toy isn't a Sea Lynx...)

the list is wrong, swindle is not a jeep, hes like some eastern bloc/european (german i think) model or something

In some threads in the last couple of years, someone posted a pic of a prototype US. Army military all-terrain vehicle that was being researched in the '70s, and was abandoned when US Army got the Humvee. Swindle is like an SD version of it, sorta like G1 Bumblebee is SD VW Bug. I'll try to find those pics.

    Here's what I've found:

(second and third pic from the top)

EDIT: My mistake, it was an XR 311 prototype

It's the VAMP! I didn't think it was based off a real vehicle.

Yup, its a XR311 or its derivative Lamborghini Cheetah (Vamp was based on the Cheetah).

Hmmm, I don't think so. He might've been portrayed more as a traditional Jeep in the cartoon, but his toy design is really different:

    http://www.tfu.info/1986/Decepticon/Swindle/vehiclemode.jpg

He doesn't have the classic Jeep grille (or a grille at all) and his headlights are nestled on a slanting hood between two big wheelwells. If anything, he looks more like a militarized dune buggy.

I'm sure one of the veterans around here knows exactly what he is, though.... it's only a matter of time till one of them sees this thread and sets us all straight. :)

Actually your wrong about Brawl he's a Leopard 1.

Now Vortex is harder to pin down. Unlike Blades who's obviously a UH-1 (aka the Huey from the Vietnam era). He's far to blocky to be a real Helocopter, he could simply be a UH-1 too (but fudged like the Mini-bots). That said a EH-101 comes the closest to what he looks like.

    Royal Navy EH-101 Merlin.

Onslaught however is another story. I have trouble buying he's anything that actually existed. Closest you could come is this.

    It's Russian.

    Hmmmm...
Well, they could've named him after whatever the model sheet was based on, but certainly the Swindle *toy* is based on the XR311:

    Agreed. No doubting the resemblance.
