Is today Columbus day? I remember that it was a slightly bigger deal when I was a kid.
Yup.. basically it is just a federal holiday now..
Yeah. School was closed, work was not.
No mail, no check..
I went to a harvest festival and had BBQ corn on the cob. T'was a good day.
I got to get back to work after a week and change off.
These days, it's not a legitimate holiday unless Google changes their logo for it.
(Which, they didn't.)
School wasn't closed to me.
Stupid Columbus Day. Like anyone cares anymore about some dead guy who discovered the New World.
working a 16hour double today. 8am to midnight. Awesome
Except he didn't.
A normal Monday for me.
what do you mean?
Sure, it wasn't the continent he thought he was on. And it obviously wasn't new land to the natives but it was new land to the known world at that time.
lots of people found america before columbus, and yep, it was already inhabited by the natives who knew of it for who knows how long.
columbus just made it a big deal and got the credit for "discovering" it
When school is closed, I get a day off from work
Columbus gets the credit because before his expeditions, North America was a big unknown to the Eastern Hemisphere. Sure, there were the Viking expeditions, but it's not like they went around and told everybody. Columbus had the backing of Spanish royalty, which was probably a big reason he gets credit.
Oh, sorry, that's September 19th...
Yeah, I remember it being a big deal in first grade. Not only did we have it off, we did an art project for it the week before. Of course the lesson was filled with all of the commonly accepted "facts" like a flat-world being widely accepted in Europe or that, of course, Columbus was the first person to set foot on the continent. By the next year though it had pretty much disappeared because of outrage. It's kind of sad actually since I'm part Italian but there are no other festivals associated with Italian national identity like St. Patrick's day is associated with my Irish side. I guess it's for the best though, I don't think I could take two holidays a year with people butchering my ancestors' accents.
Funny, you get a day off when school is closed. I end up working twice as much.
Columbus was also off his rocker. From what I understand, he was all about eradicating the Native Americans.
I didn't get the day off from work either, but then again, at UPS, "holiday" is a four-letter word.
right, didnt he prove that the world wasnt flat? Also, even if it is true that other people had been on the continent, they didnt realze it, or document it. He was a mster navigator, that believed that the world was round and fought against society to prove it.
If we found life on another planet should we not go? Columbus helps us remember the spirit of exploration!
