So as the title suggest, wtf is up with those of us who intentionally make it a point to hide the fact that we collect or otherwise have an interest in transformers?

I mean if nothing else, the people who we feel that we've gotta hide something like this hobby from probably aren't worth valuing their opinions anyway, and it's not like the only other option is to make excuses to point out that we're into this stuff. Like, what's wrong with simply enjoying this hobby like we do with other things, and then letting it be known if it comes up?

My Friends know and don't care. Some immediate family members are tolerant enough to the point they'll buy me TFs as gifts.

But that old "Those who mind, don't matter...." thing doesn't always hold true.

Some things are better kept from those who are in a position to influence your career prospects for example.

I'm active duty military, and while the only person I'm out to impress anymore is my fiancee/wife, people get enough crap (and office jokes at their expense) about hobbies, quirks, and nicknames without throwing nerdy toy collecting into the mix, lol. And the humor at work can be downright crude and lewd enough as it is, heh, so why give anyone more ammunition to use against me?

I'm in the belief that everyone has one things that they do that they don't yell to the whole world that they do. Personally, I don't care who knows what I do for the most part, but I try not to go all nerding out with my friends and co-workers who aren't into some of my hobbies.

I kinda did in the past when I was all obviously fanboy acting. I still act like a fanboy but I dont hide the fact that I collect TF's and I really dont care IMO about what other people has got to say about it. Nobody hates on me for being a TF Fan or collecting TFs so why should I hide it?

Plus it makes me sorta unique in most of my classes as "The TF Dude" :D

All I say is "You like to do that, I like to do this. You think my thing is nerdy/gay/stupid/childish, I think your thing nerdy/gay/stupid/childish. No problems here, we can get along just fine."

    This.

As a lawyer, being known around the office as the dude who plays with childrens' toys would be nothing but the death knell of any chances I may have had of ever making partner.

While I can somewhat understand hiding it from people can influence your future and whatnot (although I'd still have to question how this could mean more than one's actual contributions to their business anyway), why do random people matter, what why can't we just turn it around to make them look stupid for even trying to use it against us in the first place?

For example, lets take the following situation, keeping in mind that nothing here is even that great of material.

Or you know, you could even ignore them completely like you would in almost any other situation. Then when it comes to people who you don't NEED to see every day, it's not even an issue. Getting to friends, they're not really your friends if you've gotta hide this from them anyways, and when it comes to women, you've probably dodged a bullet if you end up losing one because of this as well.

I don't hide the fact I'm into Transformers, but I don't advertise it either.

I'm not sure what it's like in other corners of the globe, but here in the UK we're quite accepting of eccentric little hobbies and pass times. And while there are certainly those who may mock such a hobby, I think that we're lucky to be part of a generation that is overall quite tolerant of geeky man-children like me!

I don't hide it though I feel like I overblow it sometimes when I post my pics on facebook. Face it, Prime and most of his G1 buddies do look cool as a facebook pic.

hahahaha your co-workers are awesome. dude you gotta get better come backs than that.

just troll them back but harder. i get to know them then troll their personality, hobby, hygiene, face, work ethic, copy their accent, nationality if they are white its even easier, etc.

if some of you are sensitive to this shit. guess what life is like this. just hit harder and maybe more often. a lot of peeps appreciate a good laugh. if you hit em' more often than they do, they will stop at some point and if you hit em' harder probably ask you to stop trolling them in person. once in awhile just hit em' with another one and you're the one trolling them.

people like to bust other people's balls, especially guys at work. like an extension of highschool. lol

    - i wear a decepticon belt everyday.
    - i wear the BIS matrix of leadership.
    - i wear a transformers shirt once a week at work.
    - i bring toys to work everyday.

i brought four primes once including MP04. my entire squad of 14 junkions. did anyone troll me about it? of course but i'll just troll them back.

Oh, that wasn't an actual conversation. I just made the shit up for the sake of adding an example to the thread, and to show how even cookie cutter responses can make light of comments that unintelligent people make.

Also for what it's worth, I've had co workers try & rib me for liking Yugioh & whatever in the past, but the fact that it usually came from the same 16 year old kids who'd constantly try & have me bum them alcohol made it hilarious. Other than that, it never really mattered in the jobs that I've had, especially since nobody really gave a shit, and to the people who did, it was just a hobby.

If anything, the only time when this stuff has ever been an issue was when I was a little kid at school, and I think it's safe to say that we're mature enough to handle it better than we did back then.

So I take it you've never scored with "Hey baby, I lost my minicon, can I combine with you instead"?

i used to, but now a days i just tell people i collect "action figures and other comic book, movie, or tv shows related things"

which is what i really collect anyways since i collect far more then just transformers.

other then that i don't see how it is any one's business other then mine, and my close friends, WHAT i do with my money.

also it does make things easier with bbts, as i can just order it all online, and not have to go into any stores.

but i do like some of the collector stores near by. but i can normally just say they're antiques. which at this point some of the toys i buy, ARE.

I think that's a bit harsh if some people on here decide they don't want to share their hobby with the rest of the world then its their prerogative not to share it.. personally i don't care who knows as my collecting is for display purpose only and i do not play with them! and even if i did still don't think i would care who knows

best two reasons. boss at work and boss in bed.

although, the latter doesn't really affect it that much to be honest. maybe if you don't bathe like the some of the ones i've seen at conventions.

I see no reason to conceal toy collecting. It's not like you're amassing child porn.

If anyone tries to put a damper on your career prospects based on your harmless hobby, sue them for discrimination. I daresay you'll win.

What's that I hear, two lashings, one right after the other?

... but yeah, that was pretty good. :)

Maybe it's a harsh way of putting it, but why should I value the opinion of someone who thinks less of me because I collect Yugioh & transformers? I mean if anything, that's like valuing the opinion of someone who thinks less of me because of the car I drive, where I'm from, etc.

That's something I've never understood, especially in a world where we can simply ignore 99% of those people.

a lot of things are not said out loud. its people's perception about you and your work ethic. not everyone will see it as cute like some girls would and cute doesn't really promote you either.

that lawyer's post in the first page makes tons of sense.

although, at work, you will see stress relievers. that's why i bring at least one. one TF wouldn't hurt anyone. i did go too far with the primes and junkions and was told not to bring too many. lol i went too far.
