Hey folks, I've just got hold some figures that fit into one of the aforementioned categories. Is there a site that has details on he fine differences between the two? I can only really find information for classics.

Also, is the henkei stuff considered slightly more valuable?

    Thanks and thanks!

This thread here: Classics-Hasbro-vs-Takara-Picture Comparisons by Trailbreaker77 was very helpful for me when deciding which version to buy. Click the pictures to go to that groups gallery.

    Try the TF Wiki.

Generally, yes, Henkei is more valuable as you would have likely imported it from overseas and the toys are considered to have more screen-accurate paint applications.

The stand-out example, IMO, would be Smokescreen. Lots of fans prefer Henkei Hound, too.

There are, however, instances where some fans prefer the Classics versions.

Now, with GDO, it appears both the US and Japanese markets will get the same product. Meanwhile, other markets, including the UK, can just stare at the sky instead.

I get Classics because its cheaper.
If I bought henkei, then I would lament rising prices.

GDO = Hasbro Asia markets, rather than Takara (Japan)

IE: Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, etc.

Hold on, I might be being a complete wally here, but it's titled classics vs henkei, suggesting classics would be on the left, but all the pictures on the left have Japanese writing above them which surely would be henkei! Are Henkei items on the left, and classics on he right?

IS there another repaint on that cyclonus? I've got a shade of purple that fits between the two...?

There was the Reveal the Shield 2-pack with Rodimus, or the Asian-exclusive 3-pack that also included Galvatron (functionally identical, with the exception of the rub-sign on RtS Cyclonus' chest as opposed to a tampographed sigil).

That's the one you're probably talking about. Molded in a muted grey-ish purple, right? As opposed to the bold G1 toy colours of the original Universe Cyclonus, or the bright Lavender and chrome of the Henkei?

    Exactly that, thank you kindly.

Well thanks to the link I now know I have a Henkei Red Alert, Cyclonus and Grimlock and the rest are Classics. Splendid.

Henkei Megatron and Hound are far better rhan the Classics versions, but everything else is up for debate. Some people like the chrome, some don't. Some people like the slavish G1 paint jobs on Henkei, some like the updated colours.

Personally I don't like the extra chrome, except on Hound. I saw a Henkei Sunstreaker and given the choice I'd plump for the Classics Sunstreaker any day.

And then United Megatron is far, far better than the Henkei version.

I prefer Henkei Hound, Smokescreen, Ratchet, and Ironhide over the US ones.

Everyone else, IMO, was pretty close... Henkei Prime is very nice too but the US one I didn't feel was bad either.

But that Smokescreen? Put them side by side and you'll suddenly hate Hasbro.

What other people have said. The difference ranges from mind-blowing to minor.

The biggest differences (and also sadly the ones that will set you back the most money) are Smokescreen and Ratchet. Megatron is a big difference as well, but with the United version (which is even better looking) the other year they've all plummeted in price.

Haven't seen United Megatron TBH. My Henkei Megs has some chrome flaking off his chest, another reason to dislike excess chrome.

    Edit
    Ooh, that is nice...

I hemmed and hawed before purchasing United Megatron because I already owned the Henkei. The United deco is *much* better, imo, and at the time I was able to ebay off the Henkei for close to what I paid for the United.

I've found that for me generally Henkei is usually better than Classics, with exceptions, and RtS is often better than United, with exceptions. The exceptions in each are pretty significant though, and its important to do your pic research when searching for which figure to buy.

Henkei Astrotrain and Classics Astrotrain have completely different decos, and if you want the toon accurate one, it's Henkei without question. Jetfire has a more toon accurate deco in Henkei too, but the Classics isn't that drastically different. I found "the shiny" applied to the many of the United decos very off putting. Wreck-gar and Kup are not supposed to be shiny, so the RtS were superior to me. United Jazz doesn't have "the shiny" like other figures in the line do, and is a better deco than the RtS release.

There's no real clear answer because the exceptions could be pretty important when you're looking at what deco you want to represent the character on your display shelf.

Henkei stuff tends to be more expensive, but Classics stuff tends to be really expensive these days too. I prefer Classics/Universe for many figures, mainly because I don't like the chrome, but the Henkei versions of some are definitely better, like Hound and Astrotrain (the only Henkei figures I own).
