This is my first Transformers kitbash/custom that I've attempted (I'm now working on a few others). I picked this up from a fellow board member here recently. I've been working on this for about a month and a half (on and off) and I've finally finished it.

Originally, I had considered just repainting the bland Classics Ultra Magnus, but everyone's been doing that since it was released (no knock to them, I love 'em all--I just wanted to do something different). I decided to take the "G1 approach" and do this as close to his orignal G1 (in robot mode at least) as I possibly could. Be warned, this can be considered a PARTS-FORMER (oh no!) simply because I am sticking to what was done on the G1/Diaclone orignal (parts galore).

Don't worry though, I only have technically 5 small parts:

    1) The Magnus head is a MyClone Magnus head that I purchased from Alyosha's Corner (I carved down the peg on it so it would fit into the back of the Magnus head when it is folded down). So technically, I never removed the old Magnus head and it can be used still.

    2) To create the missiles, I shredded a TRU (smaller) Energon Megatron's internal "wing" parts, cut off the tips, cut those in half, painted them, then glued a "connector" onto them so they can easily slide in and out of his arms in robot mode (just under the shoulder pad). These store under the cab in truck mode--just behind the side door panels. I considered incorporating the missiles into his vehicle mode, but it just didn't look right, so I stored them instead.

    3) I took some small wooden sticks (arts and crafts crap at Wal-Mart) and created a couple of shoulder "beams" (or pilons--whatever those things are called). Yes, I said "wooden sticks" or popsicle sticks, if you prefer--lol (I haven't ordered any styrene yet and they do the job just fine until I decide to upgrade it). I painted those white and added a couple of pegs to the bottom. I hollowed a small portion of the shoulder of Ultra Magnus (the small indented spot on the top of the shoulder in robot mode). They "snap" right in and are removable. These fit just under the smoke stacks in truck mode (I painted the smoke stacks white to give him a white rifle in robot mode).

These are the only "parts-former" parts and while I love to see Transformers customs that transform completely without "extras" floating around, I do think the old school G1 "parts-former" rules can be applied and actually work here. So anyone ready to go on the offensive about this sort of thing, feel free. I know where you're coming from, but in some cases, parts-formers do in fact work. With that said, onto the show! (I'd like to thank EVERYONE who has ever done an Ultra Magnus custom--regardless of the line it was from--I learned a lot by seeing the great works of him that were done and I just wanted to share my take on it--feel free to share any ideas and pointers as well--let me know what you think):

That is stupendous.... I'm really jealous... and looking over your pics right now to figure out if I could do it.. I don't have a problem with the little-bit or partsformering (it's necessary for a true Magnus no matter what, right? :p  ) I'm just trying to figure out if there's a way to make the red in truck mode less jarring (maybe some red on the legs, which Magnus does have in the toy...) I really like how the vee mode ends up looking like it's got some sort of armored windows as well... the only thing there I can think of would have been to leave the actual windows partially visible, or have some vision slits for truck mode (check out some armored fighting vees and tanks for what I mean here... like the WWII US M3 truck for example)... All in all it's a really impressive piece, congrats.

Thanks, man! The only down side to it is that it's permanent (unless I rip it all off). I did it with some air-dry modeling clay (not the best, but it worked) and the trusty wood pieces. I did the best I could with what I had available to me.

That's legit... it's still something to totally be proud of. Bot mode is a perfect replica of the cartoon Magnus.

Thanks for the kind words! I wanted to try and leave the windshield clear, but still red. It just didn't quite turn out that well, so I decided to paint it red to blend in with the entire chest. Maybe it's just my own personal opinion, but I like it red like that. I'd really like to see your take on it as well, Prometheum5.

Pretty spiffin with some awesome ideas - only thing I don't like is the cab's windows in truck mode, but you clearly made the choice intentionally as explained above, and that's fine

Yeah, the only thing weird about it is the chestplate in truck mode. I'd almost make something like that be detacheable...but I'd have no idea what you'd do with it.

However, the robot mode kicks some serious ass! That's about the best representation of the old-style Magnus I have ever seen using that Classics model. You really went all-out on him, and it shows.

I keep wanting to make my own, and it's good seeing what everyone else does when they get their's finished. You should be proud of this one. Very nicely done. :)

Thanks bro! That's exactly what I was going for--that G1 'toon greatness.

(Also, an additional "thanks" goes out to the folks at Reprolabels for their beautiful works of art--picked up a sheet of Autobot silver, Decepticon silver, and got the "free" silver movie-styled Autobot/Decepticon symbols sticker sheet)

Thanks for the compliments, guys! One of the reasons it took so long was due to that entire "front end" or windshield area. I tried a few things out before settling on the finished product. I couldn't really come up with something that both looked good still AND was removable (I didn't have any of those tiny magnets or anything, otherwise, those MAY have come in handy). Once I saw it complete and in truck mode, it didn't look as bad as I was thinking it might, so I'm happy.

I did work pretty hard on it, so thanks for noticing.

Also, thanks to Viagra Prime whose Cyclonus custom pulled me into Transformers customizing and got me to ask the tough questions involving paints and apps. (Thanks for the help and for taking the time to answer quite a few questions I had, man).

That is awesome! I'll say that the robot mode is EXCELLENTLY DONE, and the truck mode looks pretty damned snazzy as well! You've described why you went the way you did, and I applaud your decisions... The windows could easily be explained as an armored truck. Can't wait to see what else you decide to do!:thumb

Thanks a lot, Methusalen! Glad to see you guys dig the work. I've got a few others I'm working on, just not sure when I'll drop them on here. Keep an eye out though..... :)

Bot mode is spot on, looks friggin great. Same problem with the windows like everybody else said, but I can see why you did it.

Now HE looks like he could deal with things! A couple questions/critiques for next time, which could push your already good work to the next level.

Did you think about incorporating the "shoulder towers" and rocket launchers into a replacement part for the fairing on top of the cab, or vice versa? It would help to incorporate some of the Magnus parts into the vehicle mode. He'd still be a parts-former, but at least he'd carry the parts with him. It looks like you don't use the part in robot mode. Perhaps you could use the parts from the fairing to make the shoulder towers somehow. You might also be able to incorporate the chest piece into it.

Another thought that might help. Rather than painting over the windshield altogether, why not replace the clear parts with red-tinted clear plastic? You'd still be able to see through them, but you'd get the red color you wanted for the chest.
