Hi guys I've been doing a lot of thinking lately...
and giving the kitbash a little well deserved rest :D

Technically I don't wanna mess around with my Coneheads...
but do want them to have lit up led eyes :popcorn

I have ZERO experience with casting and since I do all my work in bed...
I don't think that's ever going work out (unless they find a cure for me) :sly2:

I began thinking of modeling Classics Thrust head...
I've made some pretty significant progress...

    the goal when finished is:
    1. get it to Shapeways
    2. print it in a transparent detail (or other transparent)
    3. insert led (and/or batteries + switch)

Now what I need to know is the exact dimensions for the led+batteries etc.
So that I can calculate and make room for them CLICK & PRAY :p

YOU GUYS OUT THERE WITH GREAT KNOWLEDGE OF ELECTRIC COULD HELP!

For some reason... Maya2011 keep rendering with softshadows??
when in the viewport I select hardshadow [check first pics] it looks fine :)

I can't seem to hide the backdrop image for screenshots for example...
I can't align the 3 used photo's I did scale them with PS first to be exactly the same size
(read: as in from cone-tip to bottom head)

Good luck bro. Personally i don't see much difference between this and the stock head, but i guess i'm not the biggest Thrust fan either.

Make sure to not use Transparent detail, as it is far from Transparent in my experience.

Also, is Maya free? I'd like to try that sometime.

Transparent enough for lighting up from to inside that I'm 100% sure of ;)

No unfortunately not... I currently have the 30trial...
but I can get almost all programs for extreme low prices through my ex-boss
So I expect to unlock it before the end of the week :p

[ps. of course there are other ways I no about but can't discus :2c: )

I'm downloading the 30 trial now. Thanks for alerting me to this software, bro. Let's see if it's as good as it looks.

    your welcome.... ;)

UPDATE BETA-V2 I guess it about ready to print...
but I don't know how to check for errors and this version is without electrics
so I still need measurement for the cells and led so I can make 2 halves available which you can screw together for easy access to the batteries

Your cone's shading segmented atm ( it doesn't look smooth ) . Try selecting it in Component Mode, then goto Normals from the top menu bar, then select Soften Edge and your cone's shading will smooth out.

Also, for transparancy of your reference plane, you need to create a transparancy PNG in photoshop, for the transparancy channel in Maya to work.

I don't want it smoothed... that's the issue I had...
but found how to unsmooth the viewport... still no luck on the render it still smooths :D

thnx for the tip... that actually make sense to have PNG transparancy :p

Well, beneath Soften Edge, you can find Harden Edge. That should give you the segmented look in the render more or less, depending on your lighting setup of course.

    Goodluck :)

Select all the faces you want to be smooth looking, and then set the smoothing angle or choose to smooth the normals. Setting the smoothing angle to something low will make the computer guess where seams would need to be. You could also make seams after smoothing the normals out. The normals just effect how light bounces off the surface of the model, not the model itself.

still no luck on help with led electrics...

I need to know the exact dimensions of the powercells/switch/led...
So I can mold it into the head, for even more easy modding :p

well since in the first post I clearly explain that... but I could be wrong!

but for those of you in need.. I'll summarize:

led eyes / incorporate fuel cells into head / easy access / when printing in a clear just paint over the place you don't want the light to come through

and best of all, you don't have to mod your (for example) 100+ costing Ramjet head? just unscrew... it's that great ;)

yeah the lips where actually a mistake, but I kinda liked it :p
it's still not final and could always make more head variants ;)

    that's a good suggestion...
it never bothered me, but then again I have never display alt-mode
