Saw this in the TF Wiki, didn't think it had been posted about here yet, so I decided to post it. Looks pretty cool to me. It was drawn by Don Figueroa, but was canceled. Seems to have inspired a Universe Classics toy though (Ironhide). Too bad it was canceled, as I would have bought it, it's eventual Soundblaster repaint, and the possible Blaster retool/repaint of it.

That reminds me, I need to remove the uploader Dead Metal's speculation that it inspired Universe Ironhide.

Frankly, it looks more like it inspired Animated Soundwave.

Originally designed for Classics, transferred to Animated?

I know Don didn't do any work on Animated ... interesting if his concepts for other stuff carried over though.

I can't believe that Hasbro had a design for an actual Classics Soundwave and didn't pursue it. Even with a mediocre toy (and in my opinion, this one doesn't exactly look great---it's OK), it would be like printing their own money with a character that popular.

Hopefully the reason is that they want to release a really decent Soundwave at some point, and didn't want to rush into it like they might with other, less important characters.

(am I on the Lost island or something?)

It certainly does look like the animated design was based off of it, though he does look a bit bare bones there, I wonder what kind of accessories they would have added if they went through with it.

And what the hell is up with this thread and its mixed up posts?!!!

I believe this was seen around the same time we saw DON's Classics Prime Concept art if I recall correctly.

The design is brilliant in it's simplicity. It not only looks like a good Soundwave, but it carries over many of the design elements of the original. For example, if you look closely, you can tell that the Van's back door opens in the same way as the Original Soundwave's cassette door opened.

I hope that this design is still up for consideration for the 25th. anniversary line.

Looks like the usual "box that turns into a box" method of design :p

    Is TF2 out yet?

Yeah, I meant that Derik Wyatt, Hasbro Eric and their team may have been inspired by it conceptually.

Yeah, I can easily see elements of both the upcoming Universe Ironhide and Animated Soundwave in this design.

In fact, I think I like the simplicity of this design MUCH more than the overly complicated, fragmented-looking design they eventually did use for Ironhide. This achieves the same effect and looks like it would have been much better for ol' Ironhide. Looks good on SW too of course.

Yeah, I'm not even a big proponent of mass shifting, but I like Guido's design

Though Don's is just as cool.

Personally, though that's good I think I like Guido's update better.

Guido's got unused concept art from All Hail Megatron of Soundwave as a microcassette recorder (as in the kind that are still in use today).

They have LOADS of concept designs that they never used. Besides, Hasbro probably did better business flogging that G1 reissue Soundwave.

For instance, Nova Prime from IDW's G1 comic was originally an unused Optimus Prime toy concept by Don. I believe the first public glimpse of the design was on the BotCon 2005-exclusive Infiltration #0 cover with all the Hasbro concept art, though I doubt that at the time he was meant to be anything more than a random concept image they threw onto the cover.

Don gets the expected brilliance points for thinking outside the box and cleverly keeping the ejectable chest gimmick of Soundwave, but I think it's the first ever re-design of his that I'm kinda 'meh' on. I think it would be a better Blaster update than Soundwave.

Guido's update is friggin brilliant. I'm no fan of mass shifting, a vocal opponent in fact, but his version retains the overall classic feel and keep all the bells & whistles in the process.

    Great stuff all around.
