I went ahead an repainted a second Starscream as Skywarp. I know one is getting released in the Ultra Magnus two pack, but I would have ended up repainting that one too. The black is Mar-Hyde Jet Black vinyl dye. Stuff worked great, but gave the plastic a little bit of a texture. I'm not saying I don't like it, just not as smooth as I thought it would be. On the denser plastic parts, it did not take as well. So on those parts I used a plastic primer from SEM. It has acetone in it that softens the plastic allowing the dye to soak in better. I wasn't as focused on making him look like an actual jet like the Starscream I painted, because who has even seen a purple and black jet before? Just tried to make him look cool. Completed with some Reprolabel con symbols.... right side up of course. I threw in some other shots with SS and my G1 Skywarp.
WoW. That is awesome. Skywarp is my favorite Seeker, and I can't wait to get my 2-pack when it comes out. Do you plan on doing a Thundercracker? That would complete the trio of jets. Nice work. Peace out.
Excellent work! That dye seems to be working really well for you. I've messed with RIT dye before, but it's very limiting. Your Starscream is more of a "Masterpiece" version in my opinion than the real MP-03.
You're work is amazing! Both Starscream and Skywarp are perfect incarnations of their cartoon selves. When you refered to the denser plastic parts, (where you had to primer), what exact parts/area's was that?
Very nice! It's looks smooth from here. I wonder if that particular dye you used works better than Rit with black? Or overall?
Basically, the parts that would get hte most stress seem to be made from a different plastic. They are: The parts screwed to the back of the wings. The upper legs and the ball joints. Those are the ones that I see behaving different to the dye. I'm not sure. I haven't tried the hot-water-dye technique. I can only assume the way I did it is easier and probably more smelly.
Thanks for the info. I'm thinking you used a toothpick to outline the panel lines? Or does the dye actually do that for you with the way it soaks? Bye the way, are you going to paint the nose tip purple like the original Skywarp?
I did the panel lining two ways. The first is taking thinned down flat black paint and a tiny brush and paint the lines. It will spill over and this is ok. Once the paint has dried, I take a paper towel and paint thinner and GENTLY wipe over the lines, this takes away the excess leaving only the lines. The second way, and more easy, is using a gundam marker. Then you just have to trace the lines. Both ways give you a different look, just depends on what you are going for. As far as the nose goes, Skywarp never had a purple nose except for the Robot Masters version. The other Skywarp in my pics is an original G1 skywarp and he has a black nose. He also always had a black nose in the cartoon from what I remember. I could be wrong, but I plan on leaving it black anyways.
Very well done! I'm waiting for the UM/Skywarp pack myself, though - I MUST have it by ANY means necessary...
thats bad ass !!!!when the 2 pack comes out you can repaint it to thundercracker and have all the seekers
