    So does anyone else sometimes find the name of a character on its toy packaging isn't to your liking and decide to change it in your own little mythos?
    Post any examples you might have!

    I call the following by these replacement names:

    Target Exclusive Clocker ----> Metalhead

    Target Exclusive Arcee ----> Chromia

    Target Exclusive Elita-One ----> Arcee, because she has a more 'Arcee' color scheme that Arcee does.

    Classics Predator Attack Team: Dreadwing ----> Raptor, Snarl ----> Scratch, Overbite ----> Nightmare

    Recon Barricade ----> Brutality

    Protoform Starscream ----> Retconus

    Cryo-Scourge ----> Cryotek

    Cybertron Deluxe T-Rex Megatron ----> Predacon

    Mirage GT from R.I.D ----> Burnout

    oh yeah, and Energon Downshift ----> Wheeljack ;)

    Leader class Brawl -> Megatron. :)
    I gave Alt Ricochet a different name, but I can't remember what it was. I think it was like Evil Hotrod or something. (?)

    I don't do much renaming, for two reasons: first, I feel a little silly doing it. It smacks of "playing" where I'm more a "displayer." So I tell myself, at least. Second, I don't like having to remember new names for the characters... it's hard enough remembering their real names sometimes.

    There are a few exceptions, though. The main cases where I'll mentally re-name characters are a) if there are multiple versions of that character in a line, so I don't want two of the same name or b) if their name was clearly intended to be something else and was only decided based on marketing or copyright reasons (i.e. Shockblast or Rodimus). So I think the only characters I've really "officially" renamed are:

    Classics 2-pack Megatron --> Megastorm (just 'cause, as mentioned above, I don't need two Megatrons in one line... and since Megastorm was really just G2 Megatron repurposed to begin with, this figure pretty much looks just like him)

    Cybertron Armorhide --> Classics Pipes (this was legitimized when he was repainted into Huffer.)

    Any non-Prime "Rodimus" --> Hot Rod

    Shockblast/Laserwave --> Shockwave, natch

    Alt. Meister --> Jazz

    Alt. Decepticharge --> Dragstrip

    KISS Prime --> Ginrai

    Movie Scout Arcee --> Chromia... just 'cause there is already a Movie Arcee, and Chromia seems to be an accepted alternate fan-name

    Any Black Convoy --> Nemesis Prime (mostly just for simplicity's sake, instead of having to remember which one is BC and which is NP... they're really the same damn character, anyway)

    Energon Downshift --> Astrotrain (just kidding, it's Wheeljack of course)

    Silverstreak --> Bluestreak

    BT Blue Prowl --> Deep Cover

    That's really about it. Same ones most people do, really. Then there are other figures (minicons and Real Gear, to name a few) whose official names I just CANNOT remember.... but I don't really bother making up new names for them. I just call them "Camera Guy" or "Motorcycle Guy" or a similarly vague yet descriptive moniker.

    I'll throw out a question I asked the last time a thread like this showed up:

    Assuming you have renamed some figures, what happens if a third party asks you that figure's name? Do you tell them the real name or the altered name? Or do you give an elaborate description of the real name, the altered name, and WHY you changed it?

    I changed the name of the MiniCon that came with Armada Galvatron to "Ashley" after my friend who picked him up at Wal-Mart for me. Other than that... XD

    I rarely rename toys from their given names, if only because it's only a personal thing that needs explaining if you ever used them around other people.

    "I like Alternators Streetwise."

    . "When did they make that? I don't remember that"

    "I mean Kiss Play Autorooper."

    . "Oh."

    You make it sound like playing with your action figures is degrading or something. And as for remembering the names and/or new names...that's what notepads or a new file in a writing program are for. I have a 1-subject one with names and stats written down. Sometimes whole tec specs if I'm feeling really creative.

    I've tried it before, but usually forget what I called them later in the week and just revert to calling them by the name on the box. Classics Rodimus is an exception: always call him "Hot Rod". Not very creative, I know.

    I thought the ''Rodimus -> Hot Rod'' was a default?

    Sorry, yeah, you're right.... the way I phrased that was kinda condescending. I didn't mean to imply there is anything wrong with playing with one's toys, and I can't help but do it myself sometimes (or at least fiddling with them). Consider the statement cheerfully withdrawn! :)

    As for keeping an actual written catalogue of your figures, I've considered that on occasion. Maybe one of these days if I'm feeling really motivated I'll do it. But for the most part, I remember the names just fine for the characters that really mean something to me. The ones I forget (like a lot of minicon names) probably weren't worth remembering to begin with (IMHO).

    Which reminds me of another common rename that I have duplicated: Real-Gear Booster into Laserbeak. No surprise there. But I will probably call the upcoming blue repaint by its official name, Nightbeat, just because I think that's a great, dual-meaning name for that character (the G1 homage because he's a detective, and "beat" like "wingbeat," because he's a bird. Great name!)

    I do this a lot but I dont really have a comprehensive list. Here's a few I can remember

    Classics Tank Megatron: Treds (to go with Bugbite)
    Cybertron Thunderblast: Oceanblast or Waveblast or Waverunner (havent decided)
    Cybertron Override: Minerva
    Cybertron Unicron: Bludgeon
    Movie Megatron: Thunderwing
    Energon Dreadwing: Dread, the last Sweep
    Cybertron Dark Scorponok: Black Zarak (obvious)
    Alternators Battle Ravage: Jaruga (from Liokaiser)
    Armada Cheetor and Airazor: Ravage and Nightbird
    BW Megatron and BW2 Galvatron: Megastorm and Galvastorm (to differentiate them from their ancestors)

    Classics Minicons:
    Knockdown (triceratops): Triceradon
    Terrorsaur (t-rex): Dinotron
    Nightscream (dragon): Terranotron (I went with BM Dinobots names rather than G1 cos I wanted these guys to be like new recruits. Swoop is their instructor)

    Broadside (tank): Bombshock
    Grindor (monster truck): Greasepit
    Oil Slick (muscle car): Motorhead
    Strongarm (cop car): Stakeout
    Firebot (firetruck): Redhot
    Thunderwing (blue jet): Airwave (I named all of these guys after Micromasters to make them more G1)

    Divebomb (helicopter): Makeshift (named him after a mini-con from Armada since the Night Rescue team reminded me of Emergency team)

    Overbite (wolf): Carnivac
    Snarl (tiger): Rampage
    Dreadwing (eagle): Divebomb (named after Predacons and a pretender for obvious reasons)
