According to a thread on the Allspark, a certain PSX model (#SCPH-1001) is comparable to very expensive CD players in terms of audio quality. I checked on eBay and the auction ending soonest is past a hundred bucks for the console alone! Has anyone else heard about this?

Would that be a first model PS1? I'm pretty sure I still have mine somewhere.

I got one of those models. It acts as my doorstop for my bedroom door.

How's it a scam? It's not like Sony's going around, claiming that their old PSX's are super-high-end CD players and charging exhorbitant amounts of money for them.

It's the consumer saying, hey, "wait a darned minute there, that actually works!", and then spreading the news around.

the audio quality from those things is actually rather terrible in comparisson to later PS1s and other CD players I've used. It does seem to be a scam, like the people who started it are just trying to play some horrible trick on audophiles everywhere.

Bingo. It's probably just a little joke that has snowballed because of the internet's magnificent ability to spread opinions as truth.

Oh and audiophiles tend to get so carried away that the start pretending they hear better quality. And will do some pretty stupid things for the sake of that "better quality." When it comes down to it, most of these guys just like wasting money, and there will always be a product for suckers.

Actually, it's the audiophiles that brought this nonsense on themselves. There's a certain contingent of hard-core audiophiles that believe the old LP style records are the best audio quality of all time. All that static and noise in the sound coming from an LP player is "warmth" and "life" and that sort of crap. To people with that strange affliction, where clean audio is supposedly a curse, the PS1 has an incredible sound and allows them to move from their precious LP collection to the occassional CD because it adds that "warmth" and "life" back into the recording by having a touch of noise to it.

Having an acute appreciation for music, I've followed the weird ass trends of the hard-core audiophile scene long enough to realize that someone, somewhere, truly believes dirty sound is beautiful sound. And it's that contingent that believes the PS1 is a godsend to audiophiles everywhere.
