Drunk, talking on a cell phone, and they found pot in the car. Yeesh.

She was described as a "female acquaintance" and the phone just went dead. Presumably at the same time he did.

He was heading to another bar to meet her.

Sadly... It's nice that at least once the Drunk Driver is the one that dies, not some random bystander.

Children, let's do some math: Drunk + On cell phone + Possibly stoned + in a speeding SUV= Dead as a doornail. Any questions?

I saw on ESPN the other day that La Russa had a conversation with him just a few days before about his over the top drinking. Sad. But, the guy was stupid and paid for it... the best thing anyone can hope for now is that it serves as an example to others. I'm sure he isn't the only ballplayer to tempt fate like that...

Yeah, everyone is calling the A's about their alcohol policies now.

I remember last year Ozzie Guillen flipped out when he was told that his White Sox couldn't have alcohol in the visitor's clubhouse.

Don't forget adding 'no seat belt' to that equation.

This is truly a sad tragedy but the killing factors in this are Booze and No seat belt and talking on the phone.

Exactly what I was thinking. Only without the "Sadly" at the beginning. If someone is stupid enough to be drunk, on a celphone, not wearing a seatbelt, and speeding, I fail to see how it's anything other than a good thing that they were the only person who died.
Gene police, everyone out of the pool.

They said he would have died regardless. But point taken.

I'm not sure if this makes the story more or less sad...

Less sad because he was clearly at fault and doing many illegal things at once.

Or more sad because kids look up to this guy.

I don't feel sorry for the guy anymore. Given what happened, he was almost begging for it.

That's pretty much the same thing I'm thinking.
