Not that this matters much but I've always wondered.

In the two movies and what will undoubtedly happen in the third, all the TFs seem to have roughed up appearances in bot mode and immaculate paint jobs in car mode.

Are their paint jobs like skin which can be regenerated every time they transform back into car mode or something?

You'd think that after all those battles the cars would look like they went through a wood chipper.

    Answer: Movie Magic!

    Seriously though,
    1) I think they find it just looks cooler that way in robot mode and
    2) it probably isn't meant to be overthought once they transform to vehicle mode and most importantly
    3) scuffs aren't pretty looking on badass looking cars meant to be blatant advertising for car companies.

It's a technical thing. I believe they've stated that the 'clean' robots didn't look real, so they're given scuffs and stuff in robot mode. The cars being clean is to make them nicer for the screen.

I think it's cool that you never see the parts get clean or dirty during transformation.

This. That's what I've thought from the first film, and it works.

If it works, it works, but it seems a bit like a cheap trick to me.

Like how some customisers seem to think everything looks better when it's been drybrushed with silver paint.

If a bot gets banged up in battle, fair enough. But sometimes I think it'd be cool to see how all those scuffed and dented panels line up for one broke-ass vehicle mode.

As they've stated above, I've always thought of it as like, a hologram or cloaking mechanism in car mode. Probably also what hides the lines between the transforming panels in vehicle mode.

I like that angle to help explain it. Hadn't thought about it that way before.

"Its some kind of self-regenerating molecular armor." As stated in the first one.

Seems like that explanation was given after TF1 and people were asking that too..
BUT Razerwire bringing up this question up again makes me wonder.....just looking at the latest DOTM pic of Optimus (with Sentinel) and noticed he has several bullet holes in the cab doors..will they transform him in the movie and the holes are magically healed?? Maybe the Autobots can use a hologram while their bodies repair during vehicle mode??

For these two..the TF1 novel addressed Bee's damaged legs and the fact he couldn't transform into vehicle mode (no legs, no wheels) until they were able to repair him using secret skunk works parts!!
