I saw this on the nytimes website. a guy called aol to cancel and recorded the phone conversation. it's good for a laugh how much the aol person won't cancel it. apparently it's making it's way around the web. here's the link to his blog:

I wish they made knives that could stab people through the phone.

The other services that use the AOL network and software (like Wal-Mart Connect) will do the exact same thing.

Yes he did. The guy's name in Vincent Ferrari and this has been around for a while now and the guy was making his talk shouw rounds the past few weeks. I heard him on one of the radio morning shows last week.

They make it nearly impossible to cancel. The big thing with this is that the guy "John" claims he was reading from a script while AOL is saying he went to far. If the script can be proven, AOL is in for a hell of a time.

The website can be seen here.

yeah my dad took a long time to cancel Aol....

worst part its that it messed up his desktop. after that pretty much vowed to never use AOL again-funny thing people make ornaments of AOL disks in mexico to hold signs and I once saw a chain with different disk...yeah thats how people regard the disks.-

Older versions of the AOL software hijack and/or replace key components of Windows dial-up networking under 9x and Me systems. I found this out when I was doing tech support for another dial-up ISP. You basically have to remove Dial-Up Networking, kill a registry key (can't remember where it is though) and reinstall Dial-Up Networking. Huge pain in the ass to talk someone through over the phone if they don't know what they're doing--and of course they never know what they're doing. The AOL software (especially old versions) can cause plenty of other problems too, but that's the one it causes most consistently.

Well, besides the problem that it sucks and uses AOL as an ISP. That's a "feature".

A few days after AOL fired the guy CNBC did a peace where one of there people called to cancel there AOL and got almost the exact same treatment.

Years ago I had Sierra On-Line and when I called to cancel I had a similar experience. A couple years later when I was ready to give up on my AOL account I just went into chat rooms and made an ass of myself. When you break the rules they drop your connection. On the 4th time the cancel your account. It was a lot faster.

It was an XP desktop and thank god my dad has that cisco certification of his....needeless to say after that he moved to broadband. kinda hated AOL because they blamed the failure on his desktop in a rather rude manner.(something like its Xp we havent got support for most features) yeah he got really pissed at them.
-I myself would have as well-

I went to cancel AOL back when I had it and went through the same thing, finally I lost it with the guy and yelled, "I FUCKING TOLD YOU I WANT IT CANCELED QUIT GIVING ME THE FUCKING RUN AROUND AND FUCKING CANCEL IT!!!"

Then they billed me for another month - which I disputed with my bank and refused to pay, and still have not paid.

Site's down on that link, so I can't check it out.

But it sounds like an Aqua Teen Hunger Force episode.

When I was cancelling the guy kept giving the "but but but AOL has great virus protection, without us your computer will asplode!!" argument even though I kept saying I've never used AOL's virus protection and have plenty of other things that are already protecting my computer quite well. I can't remember everything else, but that sticks out for some reason.

Yeah, it's not the employee's fault. My friend worked at AOL for a short time and you can lose your job if you don't save so many calls a month. Essentially, the guy got fired for doing his job. Hopefully he'll pick better next time.
