Canadian G1 Transformers should be known for more than just the ‘Red Slag’. OK, we all love a colour variation of obtainable rarity and significance, and as far as representatives go, it’s a good one but there is much more there to intrigue us about Canadian G1 Transformers. This week we’ll take a look at some amusing errors, fascinating extras and hopefully a few surprises too that will raise awareness and appreciation for this terribly underrated area of G1 collecting.

Another great read, especially about the Minibots and Dinobots. :)

Not original G1, but I've seen Canadian Minibot keychains on Ebay with packaging variations. :)

Reading these forums, it's always a highlight when I find a post containing a link to your newest article, Maz! Indeed another very interesting read: and not just because that Superion looks rather familiar to me. I was actualy wondering: are there any Canadian packaging variations in which (earlier?) spelling mistakes were corrected? Or do all Canadian boxes ever released state that Swoop is called Tracks or that Megatron is an Autobot?

Interesting point you make about the Canadian packages not having being knocked off: it does indeed make for safer buying of G1 boxed TF's. Considering the huge amounts of G1 Combiner gift-set knock-offs on offer out there, buying that guaranteed original Canadian Superion gift-set was a pretty safe bet and a definite reason for me to get that version.

EDIT: on this same note, I just noticed that prolific collector 'heroic_decepticon' posted some pictures of his wonderful MIB Canadian Quickswitch / Interclic in the The Generation One Toys Appreciation Thread.

As far as I know, every Canadian Swoop has the Tracks error and every Canadian Megatron has the Autobot error, but then it's not as if I have seen tonnes of each so it could very well be the case that later assortments were corrected, assuming they ever knew the mistakle existed! I haven't seen any corrected ones yet myself.

Exactly, and that is another reason I mention in the article that the Canadian versions would be my top choice, a nice variant, a cute error and almost guaranteed authenticity.

Yep, Brandon showed me the Interclic earlier this week but I didn't have room to accomodate it in the article, or indeed my friend's lovely "Jaseur" Bluestreak.

Thanks again for your kind words, Joris :thumb

    Nicely Done! :thumb

Do we know if "Red Slag" was the only one available? Because I got Slag and mine was just the normal version. But I'm sure it was in a normal Canadian Box. There is no reason to assume it wasn't... I doubt I got an "American" version or anything since I doubt my parents got it anywhere else other then some store locally. Hmm...

There were definitely red Slags, transitional Slags and normal Slags in Canadian packaging. I'm pretty certain I've seen corrected ones.

You can never have too many red faced Slags! ;)

The red Slag in the pic is a beauty though. Wish the one I have was nice and minty to go with the rest of my Dinobots and Diaclone Swoop for a show accurate team.

Yeah Chuck Liu's old Red Slag was magnificent, and while I may have seen other mint loose examples, I've never seen a perfect boxed one with a great box. Lots of Swoops though..

Thanks mate, I love Canadian G1, I would love a full run of 84 - 86 in Canadian boxes over regular US or UK G1 any day.

    Never.

    Stop.

    Posting.

    These.

The Turbomasters and Predators were also available in Canada, were there any differences from the European releases that you know of?

Keep up the good work, reading your articles is something I really look forward to, and I always learn something new when I read them.
If you ever need a (crappy)picture of a Canadian Brawn (Bruto) just hollar.

I am in need of a really nice Canadian G1 Optimus Prime box if anyone can help. I'll buy/trade in your favor, heavily in your favor if it is NM/MT. I need the regular "white borders around the pictures" version, not the grey Roller version.

Can you post it in here? It'd be cool to see if it had the side-by-side bilingual transformation instructions on the back like "Rollo" Gears. "Bruto", hah, brilliant.

Yeah I was hoping to cover all combinations with this little bit in the article:

"There are also transitional versions of the ‘Red Slag’ with black legs and normal coloured launcher, plus other slightly different combinations."

In hindsight maybe that was a bit lazy of me and I should have listed the combinations I'd seen. Had no pics though :)
