Can Transformers get rid of their earth forms somehow, and go back to being in their cybertronian forms?

Probably. Or they need to rescan their Cybertronian modes.

Do you mean just shrug it off and revert back to an earlier form like they have it as a stored back-up mode? Or reformat to the form they were before? I agree with the above they'd probably have to rescan or recover the data from somewhere if they can't find the particular alt they want to rescan in person. Can't remember where it was from but there was one TF giving out alt mode scan data to everyone to reformat into.

TFs in the current IDW comics have pretty much all dropped their Earth modes. I don't think it mentions if they were rebuilt, scanned and reformatted or just somehow back-dated their bodies to an earlier format.

Animated Sentinel Prime did. He even went back to his Earth mode once Magnus said he'd be keeping his artillery platform mode.

Also the IDW TFs change modes more often then I change my underpants. It's redonkulous.

I always thought the idea of simply 'rescanning' for a new alt mode was crap.

I accepted it in the first Bay Movie because it helped facilitate the story, but in all other TF media alternate modes should only be possible with complete rebuilds, ie, after getting all smashed up when your ship crashed into a mountain.

How do you do that exactly? There are no real cars on Cybertron. Do you have to scan another Transformer?

Probably old robot drones or data holograms gave the first forms

Or someone made a model to scan or whipped up a 3D program of designs to download.
I think in the Cybertron show a TF even got his alt mode just by scanning a picture on a billboard.
I must admit that's my preferred method of getting a new alt. Makes the TF seem more machiney. But I suppose on-the-fly trans-scanning and reformatting are a useful tool for whizzing a story along without having to stop and find somewhere for a complete rebuild.

If I remember correctly, in the original script of the 2007 movie Bumblebee downloaded the spec for the concept Camaro online and then changed into it!

Read IDW. Cybertron must have discovered a huge power source because everyone changed their forms, even if there is no real advantage. Pretty annoying too when they alter them so much, you have to hope for dialog to clue you in who they are.

I'm not a fan of the insta-change from the movies (one of many complaints, but that's not what this is about) and vastly prefer the concept that they need an outside source and there's a "cost" to getting new alt modes.

Like in Animated where they needed the pod on their ship to get Earth modes.

From what I herd he only took back the snow plow truck mode because Magnus liked his earth mode.

Surely then everyone would go around with Memory sticks crammed full of 'clip art' so they cuold decide what they wanted to be?

'Hmm today I shall be... a Dinosaur. No wait, Grimlock will boss me around, uh a Bad ass heavy weapons mobile artillery platform! Oh but I'll be called for a final push against Megatrons forces, low survival rate there. Hrm. I KNOW! I'll be a Microscope, then I can sleep in the lab all day while Perceptor does all the work!'

Personally, I always saw Cybertronian modes as a sort of default, intrinsic thing. Basically, they're "born" with it. When they go to other worlds they adapt to a similar class of vehicle/beast/etc.

They seem to imply in the IDW books that every alt mode is not open to all TFs. Eject seems a bit miffed that he "only" turns into a memory stick while other TFs are envious of Fort Max for "having guns in his legs". Seems that, like people, Transformers have varying abilities, sizes and affinities. I think that it's more fun like that. That way we can get characters who have interesting contrasts between their alt modes and their personalities. Pacifists who turn into tanks, murderous warriors who turn into lamp posts, etc.
