do you just clear the background in photoshop and save it like that? i never have understood how thats done.
You need to save it in a format that can store transparency-data (.gif is the most popular, and may still be pretty much the only web-friendly format, but I'm waaay out of the loop these days ). And you need to use a image-editing program that can SET a transparency-value (and then save it in the .gif format) Actually I see that trikeboy used .png, so that works too! (I think the filesizes are better with .gif -limited palette-, but it shows how old I am that I'm even worried about file-size for an avatar ) It boggled my mind for a while way back in the day, but once you understand how to use it, it's simple as hell, but kinda fun! D/L
I use Paint.net. You just select the background and delete it. Saving as .png is what I find best for posting online.
