hey guys, I'm TOTALLY ignorant when it comes to cameras. I'm not looking for the best of the best, but I don't want something a meager step up from a disposable either :)  I need something that can take nice pics and not cost an arm and a leg (figure $100-$200 range).

I come to you guys since, well, depending on which electronics store I go to, I get a different story on which camera would suit me. Thanks for the help.

I really like Canon cameras, so I would suggest something form their PowerShot range.
They are pretty much point and shoot camera's but usually have enough setting so you can fiddle around with them when you get more comfortable using them.

A quick search on Amazon.com comes up with these two:
Amazon.com: Canon PowerShot SD1200IS 10 MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.5-inch LCD (Blue): Camera & Photo
    Amazon.com: Canon Powershot A2000IS 10MP Digital Camera with 6x Optical ImageĀ…

Get a Canon or Nikon. Ignore everything else.

Yea, pretty much this... also, 10 megapixel will be plenty.... I like how they always try to get people to spend twice as much for more megapixels.

Right now I'm using a Canon PowerShot A1000. No complaints.
