It's pretty common that when people around these parts talk about Optimus Prime they often call him simply Prime.

I can understand why people do it. Optimus Prime is the iconic central character for a lot of people. But it's one of those things I always find a little aggravating (in a very minor sense. I'm not raging over it or anything.).

There were other Primes before and after Optimus so simply saying Prime doesn't really identify who they are talking about. Yeah I expect them to be talking about Optimus when they say it, but still.

I don't know, maybe this is just me wishing Rodimus Prime were a better loved character again.

    Well that's just Prime.

Now that I've gotten that out of the way no one else has to say it.

:lol  Okay it's too late for starting these confusing threads, wth? :p
Kidding..but for the most part unless it's a series with more than one Prime mentioned or animated, then we gotta go with Optimus.

There can be only one...Optimus Prime. ;)

I think I started doing that subconsciously out of an intent towards clarity. With duplicate names, I'd go for the part of the name that clarifies which you're talking about. In this case, Optimus, Sentinel, Rodimus and the like.

Whenever I shorten his name, I just use Optimus. I don't usually call him just Prime because it gets too confusing when there are multiple Primes and a TV show with the name.

I just call him Optimus. In G1, the Autobots call him "Prime" all the time, but it's like soldiers addressing "Sergeant Peterson" as simply Sergeant.

I just mainly say G1 Prime, RID Prime, ect. The others I just go Rodimus or RP, then SP or Commander Jerk for Sentinel. Now for Optimus Primal, I just mainly use Optimus as that's the leader I grew up with.

With Optimus Primal, I tend to shorten it to Primal because, as far as I know, there is only one Primal.

When referring to the character I only call him "Optimus Prime" (rarely) or "Optimus" (commonly) as that is his name, I'm pretty strict about "Prime" being specifically a title.

    EDIT:
Onyx Primal'd like to talk to ya.

For me, "Primal" is essentially the "Prime" for Maximals/Beastformers. I hope that when the beastformer member of the Thirteen is revealed, he'll be a "Prime" but with "Primal" in the name instead.

It's pretty simply ingrained, learned behaviour from the G1 cartoon, where everyone most often called him "Prime" as a respectful title, since he was the boss. Then they spent the third season calling Rodimus Prime "Rodimus" as a consequence.

I grew up in the 80s, so he was always called either Optimus or Prime. As others have said, that "tradition" started when he was the only one. 20+ years later now that the story has been fleshed out more and we know of other Primes, plus the fact that there have been Multiple Optimus Primes, yeah, it doesn't really work now....but I still do it (force of habit)

Back in G1 it was just a name though, pre-movie there was one Prime and it wasn't seen as an honorific or a rank or title, it was his name!

I think I switch, depending on what the subject is and whatever name I choose to use at the time. Actually choose is not a good word for it, whatever name pops in there.

    Heheheheh...:D

Now that my immature moment of humor is over, I can now get back on topic. I never say "Prime", and rarley say his full name. Like many others, I just call him Optimus.

Calling him "Prime" used to be the norm, back when the only big name Primes were him and Rodimus. But now you've got Sentinel, Nemesis, Vector, and a dozen others, so I just call him Optimus.

Okay, I hadn't thought about a grandfather title. I also didn't remember them calling him Prime in the cartoon. Now that makes more sense to me.

I'll still call him Optimus though.
