I remember watching this as a kid and thinking it was dumb, but that's possibly because I'd read the UK comic #150 and its version of Unicrons origin which was fairly mind-blowing to an 8 year old.

My question is: Does anyone, even the most hardcore of G1 cartoon fans who think Transformers begins and ends with the Sunbow animation, really buy the cartoons explanation for the origin of Unicron and consider it canonical?

No. He's a celestial entity. The Satan to Primus' God.

There's no way in hell I'm gonna buy that he was built by a monkey.

Considering they're two different continuities, and not everyone read the comics, I'm sure there are at least a few people who subscribe to the idea of Unicron as a science project gone horribly, horribly wrong.

Agreed. I'm not exactly a supporter of the supposed Quintesson origins for the Transformers, I mean I can live with it, but the origin for Unicron was just ridiculous in the cartoon. I much prefer the "gods" origin.

But fanfic makes all that go away. ;)

i'm not a fan of the deity explanation. however, the monkey theory is also lacking...

i prefer that unicron was created by someone/something, or just existed (as some negative polarity by-product of producing a universe, or of two stars colliding). like when in the 86 movie he emerges from those stars. monkey pet project was a little underwhelming.

While the actual character of Primacron is distinctly underwhelming, I don't outright object to Unicron being someone else's technological creation. It's very much in-line with everything else in the Generation 1 cartoon. The Transformers are machines, built by the Quintessons. Vector Sigma isn't magic and doesn't grant the fragile flicker of life that is a spark - it's an advanced computer that programs them. Unicron is a robot built by an alien. The Transformers can just build more Transformers. It's all very much "science gone wrong", rather than "God decided to make robots".

Uh, yeah. I do. Mainly because the cartoon origin of Unicron makes sense rather than just saying "Oh, he's a god." I don't see how that's mind-blowing at all.

When its written up like that, it totally makes it a more interesting origin. Its a shame the cartoon presented it in such an odd and dissapointing way. Saying that though wasn't Call of the Primitives the episode with the awesome art style?

No, it was the one where everything seemed to have been done in an anime style for no reason.

I never liked the cartoon origin at all. Comic origin all the way for me.

The comics are my personal canon, so I go with their origin for Unicron.

    Celestial being not Munky.

Yeah, that never really worked for me either. I'm not saying either is right or wrong, but to me the idea of Transformers being soulless automatons who only think they're alive really doesn't work for my idea of the Transformers franchise.

Which is odd, considering that's generally how I view humanity :)

The rarest item in my collection is an Infiltration #0 which ISN'T signed by Simon Furman.
Not many of them in the world ;)

    Shame on you.

Season 3, to me, was just a season where the bad episodes were really bad but the good ones were even better.

I mean, for every Surprise Party, you have The Burden Hardest to Bear.
