So, I got a sealed Beast Wars Grimmy at BotCon. Now, I'm definitely NOT a MISB/MOSC collector -- the toys must be FREED! However, I'm hesitating on opening this one because of the gold plastic. (I've had breaks on G2 Pyro and BW Torca immediately after opening them.)

Here's my question: How many of you out there in TFW land own BW Grimmy? And of those, how many have and haven't had issues with breaking/crumbling/disintegrating of his gold plastic?

I really want to open him -- help me decide!

Well, I've got a Torca that's seen tons of abuse, and the plastic's as strong as it ever was.

Could Gold Plastic Syndrome be aggravated by being kept sealed? It would explain why only hardcore collectors notice it.

Elphaorpha is much cooler thatn Torca. He's also a lot more expensive if you don't do a lot of looking around...

    Thanks for the responses, guys!

Does that mean yours has no breaks, or just less severe ones than your Torca?

RF: There might be something to your theory -- buildup of vapors of some sort, or something. Then again, it might just have to do with the way the metal flake particles layer out.

Still undecided. More responses, please! :)

a few years ago, before I had ever heard of GPS, I was looking for the Blentrons, and I was debating whether or not Elephorca's higher price than Torca was justifiable. After learning more about the figures, I'm really glad I went with the blue guy.

I had a BW Grimlock when he first came out, and I DESTROYED HIM! But, the gold plastic is fine to this day.

Mine seems fine, having gotten it second hand last year. Then again, I don't play with it much and I'm generally genial with most of my figures.

    Thanks for the additional replies!

Was it sealed or loose when you got it?

Unfortunately, being gentle doesn't seem to matter with GPS. I'm never the least bit rough with my TFs. My Torca's tail hinge broke the very first time I tried to pivot the tail. And G2 Pyro's pelvis snapped the first time I rotated his waist. Fortunately, I was able to repair the former, and the latter doesn't keep Pyro from being displayed stably in either mode.

So far, I have yet to experience issues with my G2 Electro or BW TM Megatron, though. I bought both sealed in 2001, promptly opened them, and have transformed them many times each since. *knocks on wood*

I think I may risk opening Grimmy....

Don't do it Jarodimus! It's too risky! It's like the lady at Hasbro who wouldn't transform the Legends class movie Ironhide because he was fragile and only had 2 in existence! But then she did transform him for everyone but that's beside the point...

Listen, if it ain't broke then don't risk it! MISB is the way to be!

    *stares at MISB Torca*

GPS sucks major ass. My first Randy literally exploded on me when I transformed him. Leave Grimlock in his protective bubble!

Hmmm, BW Grimlock is the white raptor yes? Mine is in storage and the last time I fiddles with him (months ago) he was ok. What are the parts I should be weary of?

    Yep.

As the GPS name implies, you should be wary of anything made of gold plastic. To clarify, this is late-'80s-to-mid-'90s gold plastic. Frequent problem children that come to mind are:

    - G1 Black Zarak
    - G2 Slingshot
    - G2 Electro
    - G2 Pyro/Spark
    - BW Torca
    - BW Grimlock
    - BW TM Megatron

This thread is the first time I've heard of problems with BWN Randy. I've never heard of problems with G1 Goldbug or BW2 LioConvoy.

I know, I know. It's just hard for me to tolerate sealed toys.

Eeg. Now you guys have me scared again, though. *cue a round of posts saying, "mine's perfect -- open him!"*

Add BW2 Galvatron to the list, him and his golden dragon feet!

It doesn't have to be played with to break, I simply picked up Galvatron after having him on display for a month or so and one dragon foot just snapped, as if I ripped it out.

So not, I can safely say that gold plastic breakage is not attributed to heavy playware.

What is the chemical reason why GPS happens? Anybody know? The post above pretty much leads it to be something in the plastic mixed with the paint or dye or whatever that causes the problem.

Gold & Brown plastic should be outlawed. Anything that needs to be gold or brown should just be painted gold or brown. End of story. Problem solved.

    Damn you MISB Torca!!!

Brown plastic is almost as bad as gold, just ask any TM Megatron owners who've had there's snap.

I also had a BW Randy that literally crumbled in my hand. He's not that cool anyways, so it was no huge loss. It was just amazing how he just broke down with almost no handling at all.
