Ok, sorry for alienating lots of the board by only asking for Brits.

This is a two-fold thread. A) Being a Londoner, I am only now learning to drive and may, indeed, have to purchase a car at some point soon and need some financing advice.
    B) In real life I'm a mild-mannered reporter for a car magazine (ironic, huh). We're running a piece this month on customer experiences of car finance.

    So, right and therefore:
Has anybody here bought a car on finance in the last 18 months? If so, what did you go for - HP, PCP, lease, loan? - and, most importantly, how much did you feel you understood about the process and your options?

    Cheers for any help!

Being 28 now, I recently bought my first brand new car I didn't quite have the full amount i needed so I borrowed a few grand from my bank, They made everything clear to me and i fully understood I already have a mortgage with them etc etc so it just seemed like the logical thing to do, Back when i was 18 i was gagging to get a brand new car on finance with all the offers of 0% credit and free insurance it was very tempting for a young lad I talked with a salesman but he seemed like all he wanted was his commission and was asking for bank details within about 10 mins of me making an enquiry I never went through with it, I'm glad I didn't in the end because I got hit buy a pick-up truck 2 weeks later lol which wrote off my car.

    hope this helps

    Jono

I can help you out! Bought a 1.9 CDTI vauxhall astra last November. I also work for a well known car company. I have to say it was a lot quicker than the first time I financed a car and a lot more informative. Though this maybe down to the dealer at the time. Anymore help needed then do ask!

    Ok....

What you do is buy a nice used vehicle you can afford to pay outright.

True, 80's Bimmer would be lots of fun. May even buy driving gloves and some stone-cold aviator shades for one of them.

Ooof, can't help you on buying cars on finance.

So far in my life I've bought a

    i) new Mazda 3, outright from Mazda.
ii) 2nd hand Daihatsu Terios, outright from eBay.
iii) 2nd hand Daihatsu Sportrak, outright from eBay (amazingly both eBay sales were perfect, but I have heard horror stories)
iv) New Refridgerated van, but based off a 2nd hand van.

But yeah, finance is something I try to stay away from.
