Thanks to everyone for leaving great comments about my first post (G1 Optimus Prime)!

Here's another little something I just did; it's a reimagining of Bumblebee and Cliffjumper as actual cars with more of an "Alien Robot" than a "Cartoony Friend Robot" feel. I'm actually working on an Optimus PRime like this but it's very slow going as I'm having trouble figuring out a solid transform for the legs. Grr.

Bumblebee is, of course, a classic VW Beetle. I put some custom trimmings on it that some Beetles actually have (like front fender lights and window canopies) and blue-tinted windows to match elements of the G1 cartoon color scheme. I also based my head and limb details on extrapolations from the original toy.

I did a lot of research to figure out what Cliffjumper might actually be in car mode. The closest thing that I could find that really fit was a Renault 5 Turbo 2 (1984). This is an Italian rally car so it fits the sort of "offroad racing" persona in the cartoon. Further, if you think of Bumblebee and Cliffjumper as sort-of "brothers" the fact that their both rear-engine Euro-cars really fits as well.

Some of you might ask why I made Cliffjumper shorter than Bumblebee in the picture. Well, the Renault 5 is actually two feet shorter than a classic VW Beetle with a smaller wheelbase as well. So, when in robot mode (as I created their transforms) Bumblebee would be roughly 17.75' tall and Cliffjumper would be 15.5' tall -- making Cliffjumper "the little brother."

I would actually love to create these as transforming 3D models but I lack the gear to do it. My old G4 Mac cannot handle Maya. Ah well.

    I hope yah'll enjoy!

P.S. The fact that the image is desktop proportional is actually an accident.

Dude, AWESOME re-imagining of the characters while still sticking to the original toys. I love it!

But... I always thought Cliffjumper was a Porche given the "Penny Racer/ChoroQ" treatment.

    edit:

Yeah, Cliffjumper is most definatly this:

    Porsche 924 Turbo

Look at the headlights, spoiler, unique cut in the right side of the hood, etc.

Still...wow that pic you drew is killer!

Wow, incredible work. You managed to create a new look for two characters, who are still recognizable and kept the spirit of their character intact into these new designs. Amazing! :D  These would definitely look great as 3D models. :thumb

Damn, I wish I'd known about that Porche. Look for a redo on that in the next week or so. The thing that gets me most about that is the fact that the Porche 924 has sp much simpler detailing than the Renault 5. The R5 was a real b!tch to deal with, actually.

Thanks for the compliments, by the way!

Oh, and the skinny leg thing is due to the fact that I wanted to mimic the original transformation style and you just cannot fit much under the front ends of those two cars. I actually have it so that thier thighs telescope down into the calf area -- so they needed to be thin. I actually played with some other transform styles a bit (ala Classics and whatnot) but was actually dissapointed with the overrall effect compared to a G1 look.

So, yeah, I'm redoing Cliff. Grr.

Kickass! I love the rendition. Somewhere firmly inbetween IDW and Movie styled. :dj

Those are awsome! My one suggestion would be to mabe do more with the torso, so they dont look as blocky, but thats just my opinion. Still awsome though, the movie bots should be this way. :)
