The latest in my ongoing tradition of kitbash projects that will no doubt get stalled in the early development stages.... ;)

Been working out some ideas for some good ol' G1 Combiners! I know lots of folks have been working the Combiner angle lately, but I wanted mine to be different... that is, as close to no additional parts as possible! That means no imported crotches or thighs or forearms from Unicron or Primus, etc... kind of a challenge for someone of my limited skills.

Anyway I haven't gotten down to the dirty work yet... building connection points etc... but I wanted to map out the transformations and get an idea of where I was going.

These figures are lying down and not connected. The colours are mixed in Photoshop, but everything else is really there as seen.

Bruticus is mostly figured out, and I just need to get to the modding of the individual Combaticons now.

Menasor is very preliminary at the moment. The choices for the Stunticons are far from final, though I'm fairly certain I'll be using the Mirage and Sideswipe molds from Classics for the arms. Now I just need some good sports cars for legs... hmmm... any advice?

Cool, I like the transformation of Optimus Prime in Menasor body.
I would swap the legs in Bruticus, so each side of the bot would have a bulkier limb.

    LOL!

Yeah, I didn't notice until after I posted the pics that Bruticus is all heavy on one side. I'll probably swap 'em like you suggested. :)

These are looking great so far, bro. I really like them both and I like that they're pretty original and thought out. My favorite has to be Menasor--that thing looks like an updated G1 Menasor mixed with the Japanese/all detailed look.......and they're only WIP. I'll be watching these and I can't wait to see what you do, man. They both look great and Bruticus looks awesome, just a bit heavy on that left arm of his (but there aren't too many choices for a copter to use).

Keep up the great work, SMOG!

These rock smog. What really stands out is the excellent choice of Universe Prime in Bruticus. Truck mode will be right on and the wheels-on-gestalt-legs looks just too cool and is actually part of the original bot. Awesome.

Bruticus already looks decent. Armada Prime was also my choice on Menasor but really fits great on Bruticus. Swindle's bot mode lacks a bit of articulation but his military mode is just too great to pass on him. The use of these MBPR front panels are a great idea.
As for Menasor, I was gonna use Armada Prime to add bulk to Menasor's upper legs.
Geez, we must've been soulmates in a distant past because I would have done most of them your way!!! Cheers! :)

Dude, I like these more traditional forms. While the work that goes into making the Unicron/Primus styled combiners is impressive, I personally think your ideas here work better. Menasor especially has a PERFECT G1 Cartoon feel (I only say that because I just watched a Menasor episode the other day).

If you could take some shots as you figure out how to connect the limbs, that would be helpful to me in the future...

Great work. I love them both. As to the bulkiness issue with Bruticus, can you flip blastoff around so that the shoulder is made out of his engines? That would make the two shoulders look a little more equal.

Awesome job! I agree there are a bit of concerns regarding the bulkiness on one side of bruticus, but it's not too bad all things considered. I think these are two very creative and great looking gestalts. Can't wait to see the final product.

    Very good start here!

for Bruticus, I would definatley recommend Universe Classics Hound over Cybertron Cybertron Defence Hot Shot.

As for Menasor, I would put Dead End as Classics Bluestreak (Silverstreak), and Wildrider as a modded Classics Hot Rod (Rodimus) without the spoiler :)

    Keep up the good work!:thumb

Awesome ideas, but I need to toss a stick into your wheel spokes. Energon Hotshot SUCKS. That is one of the WORST toys of all time imho. Might I make the humble suggestion of Universe 2.0 Hotshot instead? Better design, better poseability, and you'll have a leftover minicon you can play with!

Wildrider Suggestions: 2.0 Hotrod, 2.0 Hotshot, Cybertron Downshift/Big Daddy, or Bluestreak

Smog, you always have some creative things in the works man.

I am also using the prime mold for my Bruticus as well, not in the same manner however. Motormaster is incredibly creative and the Sideswipe mold makes an awesome arm in itself. Your projects are looking awesome as is.

I noticed that both gestalts will have a very high knee. Will you keep this or try to create an additional knee articulation around where the bots combine?

WHOA! I didn't expect to get this much traffic! Thanks everyone for the overwhelming positive comments! :)

It's going to be a long haul to get these combiners finished, and I already have many other "projects" floating around unfinished (I'm big on THEORY, more than practice, unfortunately)... but I'm pretty excited about these.

You meant Armada Prime, right? They told me I was mad to use Armada Prime... MAD!!! :D

Heh... you recognized those panels, eh? CD Hotshot is a bit bricky, true... but he's been my first choice for Swindle for while now. This armoured car mode feels like a tougher, more battle-ready altmode, that also makes him seem less puny next to Brawl.

As for Menasor, I was gonna use Armada Prime to add bulk to Menasor's upper legs.
Geez, we must've been soulmates in a distant past because I would have done most of them your way!!! Cheers! :) [/QUOTE]Man, coming from you, that's an honour!Though of course, you actually follow through on your ideas... I'm still working on that one. Sigh...

Dude... if I can figure out how to make these limbs work, it'll be a trial-and-error miracle! I'll try to take some pictures, even if it only serves as a cautionary tale to prevent others from making the same mistakes I'm doubtlessly going to make! :)

Yeah, I've tried that, but the proportions are still a little odd. At the moment, I think my best bet is to swap Brawl and Swindle, and try to streamline Vortex a bit, so he doesn't look quite so bulked out. I considered Armada Cyclonus as well, but I find his alt-mode looks a bit too space-age.

I don't want to use Hound simply because his design says "Hound" to me, with the jeep grill on the chest and all, and I wanted Swindle to be more distinct and military-looking. I figured that as a munitions specialist, it suits him to have all that extra weaponry. Plus, I like his flat chest, which reminds me of the G1 Swindle toy in a distant way.

Arguably, if I was doing a larger team, I might try to use the upcoming Crossovers Captain America due to his altmode and boxiness... but I think that figure will be too large to fit.

Your suggestions are welcome... the Energon cars are probably temporary. However, for the Stunticons, as much as possible, I'd like flat, boxy chests like the G1 versions. I find it gives them a distinct look from the Autobot cars, which is why I'm going to try to avoid using the Silverstreak mold if I can. I'm really not sure if there are that many options to work with unfortunately. I'll probably end up using Classics Rodimus though...

Maybe... though I'll just paint a Rodimus instead. Cheaper that way. :)

Nope! That's the exclusive Roadbuster version, but I tweaked all the colours in photoshop to reflect what I'd like to do.

Honestly, I have a soft spot for Energon Hotshot... he's got a nice car mode, and I consider him better than some of the other molds of the time, like E. Rodimus, E. Mirage, Armada Sideswipe and Armada Blurr (faint praise, I confess). Plus he has the boxy chest I was mentioning above. But in any case, he's mostly a placeholder for the moment, don't worry. :)

I've had my eye on Classics/Universe Hotshot... he looks promising!

Thanks! I don't meant to disparage the kibble-users who have gone before me, but I just wanted to do it a different way because "perfect change" combiners like the old Gobots Puzzler always impressed me.

I hope I can pull it off!

I'm a bit concerned about the size of Menasor's horns. I do like the "samurai" look they give him, but are they too big? Too exaggerated? I can't decide if they should be half that size or not.

Oops, forgot to respond to this. If I can give them a strong knee joint around the combination point, I will absolutely to this. More joints are great, so long as they don't make the overall figure unstable.

Bruticus will almost definitely have lower knees. Menasor may have some problems there because at the moment, the Cybertron Prime's foot extensions are providing the "backbone" for connecting to the lower leg cars.

Does anyone know if that little car drone that forms the chest of G1 Menasor actually has a name? I'm wondering if I should integrate a mini-vehicle into the design or not.
