So, I'm heading to London and Bath for 10 days next week. I actually have a UK cell phone that I will be taking with me for use while I am there, but I will also be bringing my iPhone, mainly to be using it as an iPod and for some Wifi internet.

    My carrier is Bell/Aliant (Canadian).
I'm wondering what I need to do to keep it from charging me a fortune from roaming charges and all that; and whether or not use of the 3G network over there will burn me bigtime. Is there any way to just keep it from connecting to other networks so that I don't get charged anything while I use it for music etc.?
    Or am I completely retarded?
    Someone please fill me in!

But that renders it useless as a phone, does it not?

Have you contacted your carrier to find out their overseas policies?

I thought they were already useless as phones. :)

Besides, he said he wasn't going to use it as a phone.

Yeah, if you have no want of phone functionality just kick it into airplane mode.

Yeah, airplane mode is your answer.

However, if you want to use it as a phone without roaming, you can buy pre-paid SIM cards, from what I've heard.

Use it just like a Virgin Mobile phone (and the like), and when your time is up, just buy a minute card.

    So:
    Airplane mode for iPod usage.
Prepaid SIM for phone usage without roaming.

Thank goodness. Apple needs to track everything I do so they can sell me more things.
