This is just breaking over the airwaves in my state.

Pawtucket, Central Falls mayors call for state's help to keep Hasbro in Pawtucket

    EDIT: ARTICLE UPDATED
PAWTUCKET, R.I. -- The mayors of Pawtucket and Central Falls are demanding that state leaders help prevent Hasbro, the toy company with more than 1,000 local workers, from leaving the area.

Pawtucket Mayor Donald Grebien and Central Falls Mayor James Diossa have scheduled a 2 p.m. news conference on Hasbro Way to demand help “to stop a large company that employs over a thousand workers from leaving Pawtucket and Central Falls.”

In a statement, the two mayors said they are calling for Governor Gina Raimondo and General Assembly leadership “to learn from the Pawsox failure and act to put together a comprehensive plan on a issue of critical importance to the cities of Pawtucket and Central Falls.”

Hasbro spokeswoman Julie Duffy said in a statement: “We are in the process of evaluating several options for contemporizing our corporate headquarters, including finding a new corporate campus in the vicinity of our current headquarters.”

Duffy said the company was “committed to delivering a fully-updated, connected and flexible workspace for all of our employees, and want to find the right solution that will ultimately create the best corporate headquarters for Hasbro into the future.”

I don't understand how they can petition the state to prevent a company from moving.

Does "prevent them from moving" = "convincing them to stay"?

They probably want to state to lower their taxes or something like that to make it more economical to stay.

If they're just appealing for help they can tell their voters they tried.
If they don't do anything their political opponents can say they lost a thousand jobs.

Pretty much this. The Madison Square Garden NYC sports teams Knicks and Rangers don't pay NYC tax. Special deals can be made.

I had no idea either. A quick Google search from a while back said Providence is an option. Not sure if that's still the case.

This was my exact thought. A news like this broke because Hasbro may have announce its potential departure from the state.

My thought exactly. Classic big business maneuver. Why not lower the amount of materials used in the product while also increasing price to drive up profit while you're at it?

    ....Oh, wait.... :p

If they're just considering moving from Pawtucket to Providence, that's hardly a concern to anyone who doesn't live in Pawtucket (and really, it's Rhode Island. How far away from each other are these two cities anyway?). Wake me when they're looking at moving to, oh, I dunno, Louisville, Kentucky... ;)

It's a 13 minute drive from Hasbro's Headquarters to the Providence Place Mall. They're very close.

Google Earth says they are 5 miles apart. Lol. I'm wondering where they actually plan to move?

What exactly does Hasbro still make in RI? Do they have factories there? I know a lot of their board games are still made in the US, but I assumed production was spread out.

Guess it would depend on if they were paying Property taxes for the property, that would probably be a pretty big chunk of change, not to mention the local business that count on Hasbro being where they're at.

Hasbro should come to Cincinnati where Kenner was. Kenner was a fixture in my area and it would be awesome to have Hasbro come in

So the employees might have to drive ten minutes to work instead of five. Some of them would no doubt end up living closer to work!

Seven miles apart... dear lord. In Louisville if you drive seven miles you haven't left Louisville.

    YES
