But it still didn't outdo Revenge of the Fallen's opening weekend...or that's the fly in the ointment for every other article I've read regarding box-office grosses.

I think the figures from Fourth of July weekend will prove quite promising ;)

ROTF did better on its advanced opening sneak-peek nights, but if I have been reading things correctly, DOTM just knocked Spider-Man 2 out of the top spot for biggest July 4th opening ever. So obviously it would have also already beat ROTF going by those numbers.

I hate that it isn't outpacing ROTF, but it does have ROTF's bad name to contend with. One thing that puzzles me is that the world seems to have this reaction of being duped in regards to ROTF.

The summer moviegoers who saw it, probably more than once in many cases, seem to have been affected by the (largely deserved) critical shellacking it got. It's as if once the cheering and enthusiasm subsided, everyone collectively said, "Oh wait, yeah, that movie sucked."

I, like most people, enjoyed it at the time, but am somewhat pained by how much better it could have been.

All that being said, it is a smash hit, and just because it didn't get off to the same start ROTF did, it could still end up beating it.

"Michael Bay laced my popcorn and soda with some kind of drug to make me think I loved his movie!" :p

But in all actuality, it's very rare for a 3rd film to do even better than the second film. The majority of the time, the first sequel has a huge spike in popularity, but the third film will not do so well. There are exceptions to the rule (Toy Story 3, for example), but then you have those threequels that fall short like BTTF Part 3, Spider-Man 3, and POTC:AWE.

People will go to see the movie because of what they HOPE and EXPECT to see. Most will leave like, "man, it couldve been great", but at that point the ticket is already sold. The numbers dont mean the movie is good, it just means many people around world THOUGHT it would be good.

To be fair, Revenge of the Fallen wasn't up to either the first or third film's standards. While I enjoyed seeing it at IMAX, and I can still enjoy parts of it on BluRay, (the Shanghai scene was pretty rad), the writing, pacing and lack of good characterization was pretty much left behind. The third film is much better, and likely to generate better word of mouth that RotF did. Over time, that sort of stuff is what'll compel more people to see it.

    ROTF was not the problem.
if it had released two trailers not the best scenes in 3D, but with lots of good scenes that was in 3D.
would have done more, much, much more.
between 550m and 600m in the same period.
air battles, persecution on the road, Cybertron, battling robots and talking, flying through the city with Optimus, basejumpers and other large 3D scenes.
if they were willing to disclose a great 3D movie trailers through 3d, had to contain some of the best scenes in 3D.
this was the biggest mistake of marketing to the first TF movie and great in 3D.
    a little at a 3D scene.
independent of the film is good or bad.
    would have a larger audience.
is that for most the film was excellent.
    but that's good.
I think next week to do more than TF2 did in its second week.
and has not yet debuted in China and Japan.
    mainly in China.

this. the bright side is that Dotm isnt being called "the worst film of the decade" like Rotf was. with rotf, all the critics bashed it. every.single.critic. with this movie, there's one side of critics who hate it, and another side that thinks its kickass.

Not ALL critics bashed ROTF. I good percentage of them yes but not every single critic. DOTM still got a 38% on Rotten Tomatoes. Not good at all but wheat can you expect from those dolts.

And it still hasn't even opened in places like China and Japan, where ROTF did over $20 mil in both those countries.
