Well this certainly took longer than expected. Going through all my photos and searching the net for ones I was missing or needed better copies of, resulted in having 257 photos to process, edit and use, in a report that spans 16 webpages.
The result is a very long-winded report, that may bore most of you, but just scrolling through the photos should interest some of you. I generally put in as much info as I can for my own future reflection, but if others are interested, then that's even better.

The main index page can be found here:
    http://www.otca.com.au/bc08/bc08intro.html
(index of pages is at the bottom)

Every year it takes ages to do up these reports like this, and each time I fool myself into thinking it won't take as long as the last one...

I remember reading your report from last year, I think, and it was good. Keep up the good work.

I'm glad to read you review of Botcon, But there are a few things I have to disagree with you on.

Your Quote about "we had 3 Voice Actor guests this year, and they were only from the current Animated series"

Yes and No David Kaye, Well he may be the voice of the new Animated Prime, He is Also know as the voice of Megatron from Beast Wars and for about 10 years. To also include his work on Beast Machines and Transformers Cybertron

    Your Quote about
"I suggested they alert the dealers to not selling KOs to make sure they knew the policy, but obviously didn't happen with so many selling KOs there."

As 1 of the smaller dealer of this pass botcon and the 2 before. There is NO policy about selling knock off in the dealer room. I even look a the dealer registration form. The only policy I found some what to the policy you talk about was " Exhibitors agree display at least 50% transformers, Robots, Sci-Fi, or Transformer related items, Also no sale of Pornographic material , stolen goods, or anything illegal by federal, state or local laws.

    Your Quote about
Dealers were allowed to buy at least two sets of BotCon toys, because they had a dealer badge and attendee badge. They sold out of the Convention set within 3 weeks and were limiting sales of the 2-packs, which prevented a lot of real fans (like walk-ins and foreigners) getting toys first hand, and yet there was this dealer incentive taking up toys that were going to be sold off at a dealer mark-up anyway. The organisors made sure it was a race for fans and foreign non-attendee fans to secure toys first hand, before toy dealers took them all up."

Sorry to say but on saturday it was 1st come 1st take, and the hasbro store did not open up for just the dealers it open the same time that the dealer floor did. So anyone that had a primus badage could go up to the store and buy up 2 each of the attending packages.

    Your Quote about
"This toy issue and allowing dealers to sell KOs, suggests that Fun Publications are not yet prepared to get tough with dealers, until it appears that the dealers need BotCon more than BotCon needs the dealers."

TOTALLY disagree with you on that, if it was not for the dealer there would not be a BOTCON at all. If you think about it, what else would there be, TOURS, CLASS, PANELS, and the DINNER. Which could all be held in 1 day. I feel that most people would not attend then if there was no dealers room. Even if there was no dealers room, You would still have those poeple selling out of there rooms.

The rest just seam like it was the wrost week of your life, If you had that many problems, maybe going to botcon is not for you.

Yes, that was noted, but the focus this year was on their *Animated* Roles, as it was seen by their character cardboard cut-outs at the autograph area, AND the fact that very little was said about David Kaye's pre-Animated roles in the panels. He would throw in a few bits here and there, and do a couple lines in BW Megatron's voice, but it was like the other two doing short bits on their pre-TFs roles. They were being referred to as the Animated Voice Actors at the Convention, because that was their primary focus this year. If he was being brought on as a BW VA guest, he would have had his own separate panel from the Animated VA panel, like they do in previous years.

If it wasn't in the Dealer registration form, then it was obviously something Brian felt didn't need to be in there, according to his email to me:

That was why I mentioned it. Not because I am against KOs, but because Fun Pub claimed to be doing something about the sale of them at BotCon.

That's all well and good if you are attending, but what of the foreign fans who can't afford the international travel expenses. Early BotCons (up to 1999) had toys left at the end of the convention for foreign fans to be able to buy, but now toy dealers make sure none are left, so that foreign fans (and domestic fans who can't make it), have to pay a huge mark-up from a secondary source. One of the many reasons I go includes the saving I make on getting the toys first hand. And every toy dealer who buys sets they intend to resell excessively above the amount paid for it, there is another fan who has to pay twice as much just to get the toys. I usually lose money each year when I buy up as many figures as I can to take back for other Australian fans (because of exchange rate fees etc), so I never make any money out of it. Can anyone who was a toy dealer who bought extra toys, claim the same?

Of course there is a need for a dealer room. Nothing I said suggested they would do anything to jeapardise it.
I just don't think any toy dealer loses money at BotCon, to warrant the special incentives or treatment.

Admittedly, this year had a surprisingly large number of incidents to me personally, but it was all just coincedence, that didn't negatively effect my opinion of BotCon this year. And that was clearly stated as well.

I was a bit stunned at first, that of all the *hundreds* of people who have read my BotCon reports over the last *ten* years, someone would be so focussed on just the negative points, that they wouldn't have any balanced or fair comments towards the overwhelming amount of good stuff in there. Sure, there were 18 to 11 on the count of bad vs good bits in the intro section (most weren't even related directly to BotCon either), but with my 73% approval score, 257 photos, 16 sub-pages, hundred odd thousand words in the report, and the mere mention of 'it was awesome!!!', kinda got ignored my your keen eye to find things to criticise. All without a single *positive* word.
Constructive criticism is one thing, but gee, be fair about it. I accept yours, and will endevour to keep it in mind in future BotCon reports.

I personal know a lot of people that buy the knock off, for their personal collection cause the orginals are just to much for them. Or they used the knock off for kitbashing or customs.

What special treatment are you talking about. Yes I see them give special treatment to the larger dealers over the smaller dealers, like placement of the booths on the floor, and they get to walk in and make sure their shippment come. But if your talk about buy up the attending firgure we get no treatment.
