    Hey guys,

Is there a reason as to why Botcon does not do any new characters anymore? Sorry if this has been stated, but I cannot find any answer to this.

    Thanks in advance

I'd guess that they don't because they get more recognition and demand for making figures for characters that already exist.

They DO do new characters. They just re-use molds.

I might've missed them, but which new characters did they created themselves that were not already established?

Almost all of 2005's set was new characters, and it wasn't very popular.

I always felt Botcon was meant for characters we wouldn't otherwise get anyway, like the old Cyclonus, Tigatron, and Arcee exclusives.

We do still get a few, Landshark, Bug-byte would count I think, possibly Flak this year.

The simplest explanation is "because popular and/or fanwanky characters sell better."

Like others have stated, they still do some new characters though.

So they can ruin peoples hopes of ever having complete groups of characters together without paying more for a deluxe figure than they have for their masterpeice figures (ie seekers, scourge (for cyclonus and galvatron)).:p

(in case anyone misses it, there is sarcasm in this post - just so I don't be taken too seriously)

The no name characters don't sell overly well. They've learned that lesson the hard way.

Botcon exclusives started as new characters because Hasbro wouldn't allow use of their existing trademark names. 1999 was the first time Hasbro permitted use of trademarked names, albeit as new characters. 2001 was the first year Botcon was allowed to use existing characters for the exclusive toys.

That Botcon under 3H was eventually allowed to use names owned by Hasbro was a sign of the strengthening relationship between the two companies. Fun Publications already had a strong relationship with Hasbro from the GI Joe conventions. And FP's marketing style just seems to tend more toward established characters instead of making up new ones. I wouldn't necessarily blame the 2005 set's relatively poor performance on it having new characters. It was the first year FP was running the show, and a number of factors contributed. Not the least of which had to be some sticker shock. The associated story was pretty uncompelling too.

Oh I see now, thanks guys. But this opens up a new question, does Hasbro control what FP releases as their exclusives for Botcon?

Hasbro has a lot of control over what gets released. If Hasbro has plans to release a particular repaint, then they won't let said repaint become a BotCon exclusive.
