I was browsing through TFans when I ran into this article

Here's the original link with the controversial part toward the bottom. Can someone verify this?

I don't think MC or Hasbro would want this kind of karma if it is true.

Yeah, I'm wondering "WTF" myself. I love the set. Don't get me wrong, but that is somewhat of a difference to ignore.

The prices are indeed listed in the back of the comic as 80 and 40, but I don't know if its really deceptive advertising. I mean they announced the toys and the actual prices aloud before anyone even really ever got to look in the comic.

But I dunno about this whole "places have to honor the advertised price" deal, I see retailers all the time posting a note at the entrance saying their advertised special was wrong and list the correction there.

$20? People spending hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars this weekend, are upset over $20? Where's the big rolleyes smiley?

Maybe so... if it's listed. I'm impressed with the set. I just wonder what happened here.

It would be one thing if they advertised it months in advance at that price and then changed it once you got in the door.

I'm sure there is a good reason for the price hike. I'm guessing they ran into unforseen costs between when the comics were printed up and the show date.

Yeah, nobody saw the "lower price typo" until well after the posters that showed the higher prices, and after Brian's live announcement. If it was the other way around and we heard teh lower prices before arriving at the show and then saw the price hike there would be a case. Still, I'm happy with what I got and the price wasn't what I'd consider outrageous, even at an extra $20.

Even the advertised price is too damn much. Whatever.

I really think these conventions need to scale back the number of exclusives. They're just too expensive, and many of the scads of basics are just underwhelming. This year should have been Munkee Karr and Megs and that's it. The rest were "meh" beyond belief.

Actually, a fair few did see it before. Namely, we who collected our registration packages Wednesday.

That said, it's rediculous to expec tthat MC has time and free money lying around to reprint hundreds or thousands of copies of the comic/program because they ran into issues that caused a cost rise after printing was done. This sort of thing happens, and while an insert noting it in the paperwork packet would have been a good idea, it WAS clearly noted on the forms you filled out to buy the toys, even if you missed the announcement. And even on Wednesday, some people were getting the $150.50 cost for both sets as info, though the nature of that info was somewhat garbled by the "telephone" effect.

    $20? Boo-effing-hoo. When they're selling for 2-3x or more on ebay $20 ain't nothing.

It was a mistake, and I don't think there's a controversy. It's a boo boo plain and simple. Everywhere else had the prices that were charged.
