Not be be another "I wish it was here"-er, but I think Louisville, KY would work well. As with the other claims, we of course have a LOT of lodging, especially near the airport, and we do have a convention center that was heavily renovated and revitalized and expanded not all that long ago. We're also fairly centrally located.

But to top it off, I did ask the Hartmans if they had considered the Kentucky International Convention Center in downtown Louisville, one year (2000, IIRC), and they came back stating that it had been one of three or four finalists for location. So clearly it can be considered up to the task. :)

Quoted for Truth. Chicago was a pretty nice venue, but the food choices were craptacular. A long walk/short drive to McDonald's, or...very expensive hotel/con center lunch counter.

I think your source missed something too. I heard it won't just be held in a Continental United States state, but in a *city* in one of those states.

It is my understanding that Brian Savage ignores convention centers, believing them to be too expensive. Instead, he insists on always having the conventions in a hotel. Of course, having family in Louisville, I'd love to be proven wrong.

EDIT: For evidentiary support, I quote the following from the club message boards. This is from a message from Brian dated Dec. 7, in a thread titled "Bring Botcon to Atlanta!"

Okay, 1 and 3 make sense. The convention center here at least, is for like home/garden crap, auto shows and such...large scale events that take over the multi-city-block compound. A TF/toy convention could probably reserve a wing or a few big rooms, but then #3 comes into play.

As for #2, I don't get what carpet has to do with it...and convention centers I've had the misfortune of being in aren't short on carpet. But whatever. Having it in the hotel where people are encouraged to stay is a good idea I don't see going anywhere for something this size.

I'd add to the "ooh ooh have it in my home town" chorus, but honestly, that might not be a good idea. There's a shitload to do in Austin, maybe even too much. But the airport is waaaaaay the fuck southeast of town, maybe further than DFW is from Frisco.
If the con was in a hotel close to the airport, it would discourage going into town. If it was downtown, it might be crazier than the Joe con being on Canal Street. But there's also the danger that it would be close to neither like Frisco. It could be far from the airport and downtown and then all there is to do for the carless is hang out in the suburbs again.

That and given when we're told the TF con needs to be held, there's another conflict...the ACL (Austin City Limits) Festival. 70+ bands and 50,000 people in town to see them. Last year, the TF con fell on the same weekend. Having been to ACL and not to Botcon, I chose the latter. But, while there's the likelihood there'll be some bands you might want to see when not at the con, the mass of people that descend on the city tend to go for the hotels IN the city, thus increasing the chance that the con would have to be out in the sticks.

I had thought that the information I supplied before was sufficient, but see that I didn't direct you to the "Botcon" group of the boards.

In any event, if you're a member of the club, this link should get you there.

Well the dealer room of OTFCC'04 wasn't really carpetted and I heard a lot of complaints about it being uncomfortable because of that... causes more leg/foot/back pain walking around the dealer room all day and has poor acoustics.

I didn't care about that, but those were complaints and I'd guess at least some of the reasons why carpetting is important... or at least "nice"

And if you drop a toy, it cushions the blow, so your original G1 Soundwave doesn't crack in half.

I hadn't considered "acoustics," but carpeting definitely would make a huge difference there, and I'm sure that it would indeed make for a more enjoyable convention to not have to sift through so much "room noise."

Hopefully only incorrect about Texas and not California. :D  Seriously, it's probably the only way I'll get to go again this year but I can't complain, I've had a good run: 9 conventions since 1998. Although, if I miss a Skywarp/Thundercracker repaint of Galaxy Force Starscream I'll be a bit annnoyed.

    Enough rambling.

Well, for me it is more of a WHEN issue than where, and I know I am not the only one.
Seriously, a bunch of us annually cross at least one ocean just to get to the continental USA, so exactly where in the US isn't that big of a problem. :p

There is never going to be a BotCon location that is convenient to EVERYone, that much is certain.

I may actually have to go this year. I wouldn't mind if it is in a place NOT in my backyard...Actually that may be more appealing for me to see someplace new
