Why is it that when there is a book about a girl or girl series like American Girl, the public or publishing world makes a rumor about it being gay?

I heard the same thing about books with monkeys.

I'll bet George was really curious about what was under that big yellow hat.

...I THINK what the OP is asking is this:

Why is it that when a series stars strong female characters that are close with other strong female characters, there seems to be a tendency to assume they're lesbians by the 'general public?'

If so, my answer would be..."We like lesbians" :)

God, and my literature class had a debate whether the two female protagonists of Toni Morrison's "Sula" were gay...

First I'd heard of this too (and a few literary weirdos doesn't constitute "the public" or even really "the publishing world" to me).

But for that matter, how come whenever there's a book, game, or show with boys in it, adolescent fangirls always write slash fanfics about them being gay? I see that happen a LOT more often. Oh, and that's sorta rhetorical. I've already had that discussion on the boards.

In standard society, a woman is supported by a man. This has been slowly crumbling away in the 20th-21st century, however the stereotype is still there.

When people see a strong independent woman, they think... Why isn't she with a man? Does she not like men? Maybe she likes women?

The idea of these characters being gay isn't that big of a stretch when you compare it to traditional views of who makes up a household.

    Just my two cents.
