Ive been looking to upgrade to a Blu-Ray player for a while now and was waiting for the new Sony models to come out this year, but if I'm going to spend $300.00 on a very good player, should I just get a PS3 instead? I'm a big movie buff with a big collection and I take my movies seriously, so I want one of the best players around with a lot of the newest features. But the PS3 has a good player and I get a good gaming system to boot. I have a Wii so I'm missing out on some games not available due to the graphics. I'm a casual gamer and don't spend a lot of time playing modern games and there's nothing much I feel I'm missing out on except for Gran Turismo 5. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Ps3 loads fast, is constantly updated, and functions pretty flawlessly. If you are looking for a blu-ray player and you are into gaming, the ps3 is the easiest decision you could make.
PS3. Best Blu ray player on the market. For 300 bucks you get a top of the line Blu Ray player AND top of the line gaming system. And spend the extra to get the HDMI cable and Playstation Blu Ray remote.
Do not spend more than $10 on an hdmi cable. Simply buy it online and save yourself a handful of cash.
Check amazon for HDMI cables, I spent 5 bucks shipped for mine. Yes buy a PS3 because if you upgrade to a 3D TV, guess what? The PS3 can do that also.
Can the PS3 play older DVD's as well as Blue-Ray? I have not yet purchased any Blue-Ray discs cause we don't have any Blue-Ray players. Plus, most of my movies now come from Itunes. Can PS3 handle Itunes as well?
Dvds yes. And it makes them look great. Itunes, not that I know of, unless you use the free converters online to make the video files mp4s.
I gotta echo what others have said.....get a PS3. You won't regret it. I use mine mostly for gaming, but I've been slowly building up a Blu-ray collection for the last couple of years. Definitely get the PS3 remote and HDMI cable (assuming you have an HDTV). As others mentioned, it also upscales your DVD's and looks damn nice. There are also some good games out there, some of which aren't on the Xbox 360, so if you go used, you might find some good games on the cheap also.
Yeah the PS3 is definitely a no brainer. that's what my roommate and i use with our HDTV and it is just sublime.
The cheaper part isn't true any longer. You can get really nice, name brand (Sony, Panasonic, etc) Blu Ray player for $200 or less. However, I'll back everyone and say get a PS3. It plays Blu Ray, upscales your DVDs, does wireless internet out of the box, Blu Ray firmware updates are automatically included with PS3 system updates, it supports 3D, you can still play online with your friends for free without needing to fork over money to do so (though that option is now available). Not to mention all the great games. This thread is useless without us telling you that if you get a PS3, you also need to own, play, and love Uncharted 1 and 2. PS3 all the way.
PS3 without a doubt. I convinced my father in law to buy one for this purpose as well and he has zero interest in gaming.
Also want to chime in and say just as everyone else get the PS3. Everyone has posted the best reasons so far to get one. And even if you are not a big video game player, but a game happens to catch your interest, at least you have the functionality to play the game.
Damn.. seems like I can scratch the plans for a normal blu-ray player! The day I get the cash for a new tv that is..
