Debt, changing media habits topple Blockbuster - Yahoo! Finance Well that sucks. I rented all of my games there!
I had one of those "rent all the shit you want" plans with them for 30.00 a month. I used it quite a bit too. But I gotta be honest, I ended up just torrenting shit I was mildly curious about or just flat out buying stuff I knew I wanted. They pretty much lost their worth. They even tried the NetFlix thing, and just got plain overshadowed. I'm telling you, the only reason we have NetFlix is because you can stream shit with your PS3. In short, they skipped a beat and lost out.
Not surprising. I'm not really sad to see Blockbuster go (aside from the continued hemorrhaging of jobs in a dying economy), if it comes to that, but definitely find it amusing that an entity that built its empire upon a plan of undercutting local, smaller businesses has itself succumbed to being beaten by innovation once Blockbuster had no other smaller businesses to prey upon. Incidentally, this was my favorite video store growing up and illustrates precisely why Blockbuster has apparently failed. Curious, but why don't you like the "idea" behind Netflix? It's pretty revolutionary and has altered the market by itself. (I've been using it since 2000 and cannot imagine it not existing.)
I used to rent from Blockbuster alot and back in the 90's, I used to order Dark Shadows volumes on VHS format from them. But paying 5 to 6 dollars to rent a movie was just getting expensive. They say what hurt Blockbuster was Netflix, Redbox and On Demand PPV.
I thought they would of filed for it years ago. Those stores are just burning cash and they are closing up all around us. Even the stores that expanded have now scaled back for the most part, giving up space they used to occupy. RIP Blockbuster.... I haven't used you in years but that Company took care of me during my childhood. On the bright side, now I don't have to pay them that 20 dollar late fee for Tekken Tag Tournament . They called me about it awhile ago and I just hung up
I was using them awhile back for renting games, but they and every other rental place went out of business around here so I havnt rented anything in a very long time
I heard on the news tonight that independently owned stores will/could remain open. Not sure how many of those are out there, maybe in some areas without other options they still do well. Yep, there are still areas that can't receive cable or connect to the internet. Shocking but true
This is hilarious timing. I just signed up for the unlimited Netflix type plan at Blockbuster today. I just went in to rent Spaceballs and ended up getting it for free for signing up for the 2-at-a-time plan for $16. Also, I was surprised that I was still in the computer. The last time I rented something was 1992.
I my small town we had a Movie gallery and it closed last yr and then 30 mins away was the blockbuster. I'm pretty sure its gone as well cause the last time I was in that town with that store it wasn't their. So really anymore their isn't anymore else to rent movies unless you go netflix or some mom and pop store that just opened that has nothing really that anyone wants to rent anyway.
blockbuster video stores always charged way to much for video/game rentals. So I always rented elsewhere
Well its BlockBuster fault, did not embrace change....think about it, wha killed them was when tv went digital. You need a converter box to watch tv,so ppl just got cable. Plus why pay 5$ for a movie you can get for a 1$? Netflix does not charge late fee...video games were 9$ a game @ BB, gamefly charges 15$ for the month, again no late fee. Last but not least ppl figure out hoow to burn movies. P.s. blu-rays too.
I quit renting there when they wouldn't let me rent a game because I didn't have the credit card on file on me.
Three years ago, I got a call from Blockbuster saying the two movies I rented were due back aweek ago. I told them I did'nt rent any movies. So they got the manager on the phone and I told him the samething. He asked me did I let somebody use my membership card or is it missing. I told him I never let anybody borrow my card and isn't missing. I told him it had to be one of his employees who used my account by mistake. So they had to put a warning on my account. That means I had to show my ID anytime I wanted to rent movies.
