"Blaster vs. Straxus: Axe of Vengeance"

The idea for pic started with the Straxus/Darkmount toy, and from there it was a short leap to involve the new Blaster toy and his Mini-Con Blockrock. But it really all came together when I remembered that around the same time as the new Blaster, there was a Nemesis Prime toy whose bio described him as Straxus's creation. So I figure Straxus came back somehow, rounded up his wayward Optimus-clone, and set out for revenge. I haven't decided the exact setting, but I think it would be turnabout-tastic if in the meantime Blaster had assumed governorship of Polyhex on post-Marvel-G1 Cybertron.

Very nice. I always liked drawing. Haven't done so in a long time. Was never particularly good at painting. Again kudos on a nice piece of work.

Weakest one ive seen of your recent stuff/style, but still very good. The highlights on straxus pick works a but of contrast but between the 3 figures its a rather muted comp overall, maybe could use background/foreground lightsource to make it pop more overall.

    As always, nice narrative.

Thank you for all the responses! I'm flattered by the positive comments, and I also appreciate the critique.

It's funny you call out the colors and lighting, since I was very satisfied by the way all the saturated hues fill the whole space. I felt like if I lit the foreground characters more, the richness of the colors would start to wash out. I'm happy to just let the strong yellow and red with a bit of white highlight define the foreground on their own color-theory merits. Of course, everyone's monitor displays a little differently anyway, so we might not even be seeing the same thing... But, whatever the case, I'm glad to hear the feedback! Any thoughtful analysis is appreciated, positive or negative.

I think the soft pastel like dispersion and texture gives it an great standout ethereal feel. The action contrasts this to make it somewhat unsettling. Like its blasters' nightmare.

Wow! Epic picture! There's a lot of energy in this picture, and it really makes the battle look exciting! Great use of toy-only characters aswell! I don't think I've used as many exclamation marks in a single sentence before!

One of the best TF-related pieces I've see come along in quite awhile. I'm in love with the '86 movie-inspired sparks and short circuiting effects. They're perfect.

I think my only complaint is that you went with the toy's head instead of G1 Blaster's chrome dome, but I guess that's really just a personal preference. It doesn't detract from the superb artwork in the slightest.

    Well done!

    Oo, I like that interpretation!

    Don't count Blockrock out!

Thank you! And yeah, I always liked that effect in the 'toon (I actually used some "Desertion of the Dinobots" screenshots as reference). I don't know why it took me this long to start using them in my art, but I'm glad it finally occurred to me. I'm not sure how well it really meshes with the painterly style I'm exploring, but I think it's worth pursuing. Glad you like it!

Yeah, that's always a fine line to tread. I tried to split the difference by showing his faceplate falling off, but that feels like an old trick. In the end, I feel like if I don't stay true to what the toy actually is, I'm doing some sort of disservice or being lazy or something. Making a new toy look like the same old character is easy if you can just plop the old head on as-is, regardless of the differences. Making him feel like the old character DESPITE having a new head is the ideal. Not that I think I achieve this ideal all the time, but it is a goal that determines some of my decisions.

Anyway, thanks again for the comments!
