Hi all, i see from some signatures that some of the members have customed their MPOP into a black prime that looks wicked! I have a spare one that is suffering from immense paint chipping. Would like to ask for some advice as to how to go abt repainting him. Do i need to disassemble the entire toy? Any things to take note of or tips or advice? I have tried searching through the forum but nothing conclusive came up. Would greatly appreciate any advice given to a newbie like me. thanks in advance!!
If you look at the sticky, ops-was-a-truck has an exhaustive write up about the whole TF's repaint and kitbash process. That's where I learned how to do mine. I also suggest maybe taking the techniques and practicing on a junker TF first.
While perhaps not exactly a Masterpiece, would taking a Hasbro 20th Ani Prime and dying the red and blue bits black suffice (with painted in details, of course)? Can't worry about paint chipping when there's not much paint to chip. ^^
I'm currently making "Shadow Prime" and I have found that primer works best over the metal parts since bubbling seems like a bigger factor over metal. But if you're airbrushing, then I don't have any advice... =/
problem with dying is you should still paint over it. it'll help mask any scratches or chips you ever get, but you can't get red plastic and blue plastic to look exactly the same shade of black.
I think dying black then painting over it would yield the best results. Just apply another coat of black if the colour looks uneven. I'm pretty sure that should work. Good luck ^_^
it WILL work. I use that technique all the time. I have had an extra mp prime lying around for a good while now to do pretty much the same thing and that's how I will be going about it.
If you find dying the toy too much work, you can use a primer on toy instead. Primers are usually sold in hobby shops in grey or white colour. They bind the paint to the surface of the toy and neutralise the colour of the plastic. I must admit, I'm not big on dying because it's difficult to control accurately. It might result in more surface defects from the dying process with the acetone eating into the plastic. I've been priming all my customs so far. ^_^
lol, I got the torso, but the head... ahhh... don't get me started. Lets just say he can't think properly at the moment (I got his forehead off but im stuck there so until winter break he's "upper-body-less".) how did you do it rod?
